Some children are born with catarcts or develop them in childhood, often in both eyes, termed as congenital cataracts.there are other causes to develop cataracts too. Secondary cataracts develop primarily as a result of another disease occurance in the body(i.e. diabetes). It has also been linked to steroid use. And finally traumatic cataracts in babies, where injured eye may develop a traumatic cataract either during(forceps delivery with accidental pressure on the eye)or immediately followinf the incident.

Some cataracts do not affect vision, nut others do not need to be removed. In babies, even a transient obstruction of vision can lead to permanent eye damage. Thus, in a baby, the rule is to remove the cataract the moment it is discovered if it is affecting the vision as a delay can severely compromise the vision in future.
