I definatly do not give Trixie the run of the house. There is too much she can get into. We have a spare room which we have converted into a chin safe playroom. She can run and jump to her heart's content. I keep her dustbath house in there, and several things she can chew on. There is also a windowsill, so she can hop up and look outside. There is nothing in the room that can hurt her.

I let them run around in my bathroom because it's much safer than all the things they could get into or hide behind in my house. They do seem like big rodents but don't let that fool you. They can slip into and behind anything. Mine has gone behind my dresser where I couldn't get him out and other places where it was nearly impossible to catch him at. Also, the amount of wires and cords that I have in my house are hazards for chinchillas. They'll chew right through them, so I wouldn't recommend letting your chin roam free unless the house has been completely chin-proofed.

I've never had a chinchilla but I have had a few rabbits. I guess they are kinda the same. I had my bunny litter box trained and she had the run of the house, at night she would go into her cage all on her own and I would leave her in all night and let her out the next day. Friends were amazed when they came over and seen my bunny walkining around like a cat.
