Here is the legend behind the Two Spirited people of the Northern Tribes. In the native culture we have people whom we call two spirited, the two spirited people are not scorned by our culture but revered as wise and spiritual, in the days of old it was considered a high honor to have a person who was two spirited to name your child, it is said that a child who was named by a two spirited member of the tribe would grow up to realize all their dreams in life. If a woman felt she had the spirit of a man in her body and wanted to be a warrior along side the men of the tribe she was granted the right to do so, if a man of the tribe had the spirit of a woman in his body and he wished to live his life tending to the Elders and children of the village than he was granted the right to do so. In todays white society being gay can brand you as an out cast and in the same right being gay in the native community can brand you as a special spirit one to be honored and not feared.

Thank you for sharing this raydene. I was aware of the "gay" being very accepted. I have a Native American Spirit, and a deep love for the "people." I did not know that they were called two spirited people though. Appreciate the info.

Thanks for sharing this legend. So far, it doesn't seem as if it has offended anyone, nor should it. Can you imagine what this world would be like if we lived the way the original peoples of this continent did?
