Steel Magnolias |
|
Well I'm sitting here with "Steel Magnolias" playing on the tv. Now I will be the first to admit this is more of a chick flick then anything but I do enjoy it. The actresses are incredible, how can you go wrong with Shirley MacLaine, Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah, and Julia Roberts. Then you have the story and the lines in it. They are very well done.
So if you have watched this movie do you like it? Which scene is your favorite? Do you have a favorite quote?
My very favorite quote is "I'm not crazy M'lynn. I've just been in a very bad moood for 40 years" by Shirley MacLaine's character Wheezer but I have many more then I like as well. One other though that stuck out was "We'll discuss uncomfortable when you are nine months pregnant," said by Daryl Hannah's character Annelle.
I have way too many favorite scenes to list. I'd be here all night if I did but to start this off I'll give one. The whole wedding reception. Too many great lines and interactions to not be my favorite.
So what's yours?

1. lecanis (7212) | 3 years ago | You know, when I saw this movie before, I was so obsessed with not liking anything "feminine" that I didn't even give it a chance. Now you've inspired me. I'm going to go add this to my list of "movies to rent sometime". Thanks!

emeraldisle (8978) | 3 years ago | Hehe I can understand that. I think you'll enjoy it if you get the chance. The humor in it is very good but it's the humor you want in life when dealing with real life issues. I hope you enjoy it when you see it.

| 2. thaipingcat (40) | 3 years ago | I also loved this movie. One of my favorite things was the love/hate relationship between Shirley MacLaine and the actor who played Julia Roberts Dad (I think it was Tom Skeritt)? It seemed they did not really like each other, but at the point when Julia Roberts character(Shelby) died, they had a touching moment together in the movie without even speaking.

emeraldisle (8978) | 3 years ago | Yes it's Tom Skeritt:) I know the scene you mean. It was very touching and so wonderful. It's like when she did the grocercy shopping when M'lynn and Shelby are going into the hospital and she does all that. Shows how caring they can be.

emeraldisle (8978) | 3 years ago | Oh I know the way Sally Field can do that range of emotion and bounce from one to the other; shows why she was perfect for playing "Sybil" which was another fantastic movie. I do like that section with "take a whack". I thought that was perfect and just what was needed.
I know I will be laughing and crying during all this. Can't help that even if I have seen it many, many times.

4. CinderInMySoul (4362) | 3 years ago | im usually not very fond of dramas or "chick flicks" however Steel Magnolias was a great movie!
and Wheezer is the best! there arent too many movies that at the end your crying your eyes out, and then they deliver a seen that makes you laugh and laugh!
can you imagine having to color that many Easter Eggs?!!
| |
| |
|
|
emeraldisle (8978) | 3 years ago | I cannot imagine coloring that many eggs. It's like at the beginning when they show the trunk filled with them. How can you do that many eggs and then to have them smashed? I think I'd have cried.

5. MsTickle (8944) | 3 years ago | Oh this is one of my favourite movies too. I'm not clever enough to be able to give you quotes, I'm sure there are more precious words of wisdom on top of the ones you've favured us with. Another movie that I think is in the same vein is Driving Miss Daisy. Apart from anything else, the makeup is fantastic.

emeraldisle (8978) | 3 years ago | There were a lot of good lines in that movie. Far more then what I put up. It's one that sticks with you that is for sure. Driving Miss Daisy is a fantastic movie and another one with some great lines in it.

6. GnosticGoddess (3490) | 3 years ago | It's been such a long time since I've seen this movie. I thought it was pretty good when did watch it. But unfortunately I don't remember enough about it to remember lines or even my favorite scenes. The only two that really sticks out in my memory is when they're all in the beauty shop getting they're hair done - I want to say for a wedding. And the other is when Shelby I think dies. It was really sad.

|
emeraldisle (8978) | 3 years ago | There were a lot of good scenes in the beauty parlor the first one being for the wedding. I'm smiling as I think about it. Oh I know when Shelby dies it just rips at your heart and you have to cry.

pyewacket (11624) | 3 years ago | One tender moment that had a real nice touch to was when Dolly Parton and the husband were in the beauty shop, getting ready to go to Shelby's funeral...now the husband wasn't a very loving emotional type man..and he says something like how he couldn't imagine what Shelby's husband must be feeling and then he says something to the effect that he wouldn't know what he would do in the same situation--not a big deal "I love you wife" kind of thing..but I don't know it just struck me as a very poignant moment

|
emeraldisle (8978) | 3 years ago | It's a great moment. I can see why it stuck with you. It showed just how much he loved her and then later when he made her the second shop. It was great.

GnosticGoddess (3490) | 3 years ago | That does sound like a great moment!
It was heart wrenching when Shelby died:(
I guess I'm going to have to add that movie to the netflix list. What channel/ station was that on? I can check and see if they've got it on demand.

emeraldisle (8978) | 3 years ago | I was watching it on DVD. We got it a while ago from Wal-Mart. I know it was under 10 but can't tell you much more then that. I decided to pop it in again today. It's such a good one to watch.

7. Woodpigeon (2603) | 3 years ago | I haven't seen that movie in years but I remember it being a real tear jerker. Wheezer was a kick in the pants, but Daryl Hannah's character dying was just too sad.
Did you ever see Beaches? That was another in a similar vein and also very good.

9. wachit14 (3236) | 3 years ago | This is one of my all-time favorite feel-good movies. I've watched it a dozen times or more ('Fried Green Tomatoes' is another favorite). My favorite line would be from Olympa Dukakis who says "What sets us apart from animals is our ability to accessorize". My favorite scene is the last one of the movie. It's a culmination of learning to deal with death while welcoming new life. Thanks for a sweet memory.

10. berlinlife (4345) | 3 years ago | This is one of my favorite movies of all time!1 I own it on DVD and have watched it so many times... It makes me cry every time! I like Sally field when they are talking about the colors of the wedding, and she has that funny face: "The colors are pink and pink!" I love the movie... and when they are at the cemetery and Sally Field's character says: I want to hit somebody and Dukakis tells: "Here! Hit her!" Shirly McLaine's face is just amazing!!!

emeraldisle (8978) | 3 years ago | "The vestibule looks like it was hosed down with pepto bismal" hehehe. There was a lot of pink with that wedding.
Oh I know I love her face as she does that and then how they all laughed. It was what was needed right then. They needed to get that stress out. The friendship between all of them was so strong. It was wonderful to watch.
