Norton Internet Security installation problems...need HELP!  email this discussion to a friend?

I've just purchased Norton Internet Security 2007 and cannot get it to install. Before I purchased the product, I downloaded the trialware. When my CDs (SystemWorks also) came in, I uninstalled the trialware (at least I thought I did) and installed SystemWorks Basic. Then when I tried to install Internet Security, it keeps giving me a message that says "LiveUpdate or Automatic LiveUpdate is running...please disable or wait until complete"...something to that effect. I've waited hours and I keep getting the same message. I've tried to disconnect it, but there is no option to do that since Internet Security is not yet installed. I did a search on Symantec's web site and it said to disable the LuCom~1.exe file from the TaskManager. Tried that, but since it's a system file..."Access Denied". I'm at my wits end. I do not want to spend another $40 to call a technician and have exhausted just about every idea I've come up with including "trying" to uninstall both products and start over...can't do that either because of LiveUpdate. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

I want you to do a google for a tool called Norton removal tool. Download it and run it. You should then be able to reinstall your software and it should be just fine. A word of warning, Norton is notorious for slowing down your computer. I do not recommend this product to any of our customers here in the shop But since you have bought it already running the removal tool and then reinstalling should help you a great deal.

Thanks...I'm downloading it now. I had Trend Micro's PC-Cillin on my computer, but could not find my disk when it came time to install an update which required using the disk. Big pain...so I downloaded the trialware from Symantec. Should have stuck with PC-Cillin.

So let me see if i have understood all that. You cant uninstall it because it says that LiveUpdate is running and access is denied?

If that is the case i would suggest you give the following a try:

1. click start > run
2. type in msconfig and hit enter
3. on the following box go to the startup section
4. look for the one on the list that says liveupdate and uncheck the box.

confirm and restart pc - try that.

If that does not work then turn on your pc but make sure your connection to the internet is NOT enabled, i.e dont turn on the modem. Then, when in windows, do the above steps again but this time uncheck all the boxes that have a file path relating to Norton or Symantec, this makes sure that no Norton stuff will load up with windows. restart the pc and go straight into control panel and try and remove all the Norton stuff.

If that does not work then you could reinstall windows, but thats a bit extreme for this sort of thing.
