While pacifiers have taken on a standard appearance, with teat, mouth shield, and handle, there have always been things which a baby can suck on for comfort.
Problems caused by their use
If a pacifier is dipped in a sugary substance like syrup or honey (a practice employed by some) it may cause dental caries in emerging teeth. Feeding honey to infants is also dangerous due to the risk of botulism.

Infant may use pacifier or thumb or fingers to soothe themselvesPacifiers have been shown to interfere with breastfeeding, especially if introduced within the first 6 weeks of life.
Children who suck pacifiers may be more prone to ear infections (otitis media); the relationship was demonstrated in the journal Pediatrics in September 2000. See also thumb sucking.
Some older infants may have delayed speech development due to the pacifier's constant presence in their mouths preventing them from practising their speaking skills.
Some believe that pacifiers, if used for too long, may cause crooked teeth.

Problems remedied by their use
Researchers have found that "Use of a pacifier is associated with a substantial reduction in the risk of SIDS". (Sudden infant death syndrome). A meta-analytic study published in Pediatrics in October 2005 supports this benefit to 1 year of age. Some parents may prefer the use of pacifiers to the child sucking their thumbs.

I am torn apart as whether to use one or not on my baby, it just has both pros and cons, although the cons are more, I think that the pros are more important. The child's safety is always number one, and I wouldn't want my child to die from sids.
Do you, have you, or will you use a pacifier on your child? What are your reasonings. I like to use one when my baby crys because sometimes all he wants is something to suck on. How about you, answers please.

I used one with my daughter. She found it very soothing. We had trouble weaning her off it, though, as she got older.

You probably didn't need to go in to the studies & such - i used a dummy for my daughter but only when she got to about 3 months or something like that.
I used it as my daughter started teething early on & it helped her to feel better - it also helped her to go to sleep if she was tired but wasn't able to fall asleep.
You also didn't say how old your son was which makes a big difference, the chance of SIDS greatly reduces as the child gets older. However, SIDS can also come about by laying the baby on their stomach to sleep - which is how everyone used to put their babies to sleep!
You just need to decide for yourself if you'd rather your son was able to suck on a dummy to calm him or if you're happy to put up with his cries!
Oh & yes, sucking thumbs is worse than a dummy coz that can push the front teeth forward.
Good luck with your decision but in the end, no-one can decide for you & you have to be the one that decides whether you're happy for your son to cry or be calmed & soothed by a dummy!
