Yes, I believe that the right person was fired. The person who claimed to have "written" it is the one who should have been fired. According to this line from the article, that would have been the producer: "Couric and producers meet once a week to decide on topics and the producers write them for Couric to read on camera." Katie was just reading the copy given to her, presuming it to be an original composition.
