What's with all the re-makes???

I just responded to a post about sequels, and it reminded me of something that has been bugging me. What's with all the re-makes?? I understand that it's a whole new generation of people to scare the crap out of, but have the good movie makers ran out of good ideas? 'The Hitcher' scared the crap out of me and, how ever many years later, they make a sequel(which wasn't bad) then re-make the original on top of that. I have been finding out alot lately that a bunch of my favorite scary movies are re-makes(or being re-made). What is going on in Hollywood? What are we paying these people for? Personally, I quit going to the theatre. I'd rather wait and pay $3 to watch it at home where I can pause if I want to.
