With this pot a good boy scout youth or leader can make a really great cobbler. This past weekend I had a wonderful strawberry rhubarb cobbler and I don't even like rhubarb. Then there was the group that made a cheese cake. I missed trying that one and was soooo disappointed. I really wanted to try it. I was told the boys did a great job and it turned out really nice and yummy! A leader at the headquarters tent made oatmeal muffins from leftover supplies. They were really good. Another group made a chocolate chip cake. All of these tastey treats were made in a dutch oven over a campfire. Have you ever tried that?

Dutch oven cooking isn't limited to Boy Scouts, as a Girl Scout leader I taught my girls to bake corn bread and cakes in a Dutch oven. We also liked to make dishes like stews, soups and chili in them. Mix all the ingredients together and drop it in the coals, cover with more coals and let it cook all day long. Yummy.
Food tastes so much better cooked over an open fire after you've spent the day outside. We learned a lot of cooking tricks in the scouts, bacon and eggs made in a paper bag, foil packet dinners, pizza baked in a cardboard box.
OK, that does, kids break out the tents we will be doing a lot of camping this summer.

I remembered the foil packet cooking from a camping day once & made dinner with it a few months ago. Now I've got the roomie hooked on them. We can cut up the stuff, season them to our liking, put the packets in the oven & forget about them for a hour or so. Clean up is a snap too!

Oh yes, we did foil packets with burger ground beef or grounf deer meat for lunch. Several of the scouts there were new to scouting so this was a new wexperience for them. We did 5 stations and the foil packets was one station so the boys were basically preparing there own meals. After they were assembled we marked the name on it and they were instructed to take to their campsite and give to the leader there. About an hour before lunch they all were instructed to go put there packets in the fire. Then after next seeion, go turn your packets. THEN LUNCH TIME!
We do packet meals during the winter in the oven at my house. We've done on the grill during summer too. It works great with boneless/skinless chicken also.

By the way, yes I do remember dtch ovens from girl scouting. We usually made chili or beef stwe was all. Too bad my leaders weren't more inventive then. Glad yours were. I still like chili cooked in a cast iron skillet over an open fire. It works great for fishing trips too.

Hi Tess, would you care to share your recipes? My hubby loves rhubarb and we have a batch growing in the backyard. It would be nice to be able to use it this year.
I wasn't able to bring my cast iron cookware over as it weighs too much. I do miss cooking in it though.
I haven't made any meals over a campfire. We went camping in Alaska and we were too hung over to even think about food the next day. Besides, it was safer not to cook. Bears were in the area and we didn't want to share our dinner with them. We used to eat before we set up camp. No food smell on the clothes then.

Oh my, I don't think I would want to share camp with a bear. I will try to get the recipe from the other leader for you.
When I went camping at Philmont Scout Camp in NEw Mexico we had to be careful not so much for bears but the skunks and possoms. No food in the tents what soever. One boy found out the hard way. HE had a candybar in his back pocket and fell asleep and woke to a baby bear biting his A**. He had to be air evaced out. The boys that were hiding stuff all gave up their sweets willingly after that. (No worry, he was fine and back in camp the next day.)

I love cooking over an open fire. Cast iron pans are the best. I have the dutch oven,a few frying pans and a griddle. I love making stew in it when camping. I've also cooked whole chickens,cobblers and cakes. Some day I'll live in my dream cabin and cook like this every day. I'm glad the camping trip went so well.
