i am wondering how long the inital pain will last, how long the supposed 'relief' will last, what the long term effects of cortisone are, has anyone ever had it done more than once? what is the limit of shots they will...

I went to the surgeon today for my very arthritic knees (i was hit by a car in 1990 and am in major pain) and the dr suggested cortisone shots...Do they help? Do they hurt alot to get? How long does the effects last? Should i take...
