Since we can't shoot them we have to peal it back to something that makes sense. Is there any rational in letting them "cry it out" or are babies always crying because of a lack of communication

I have a 2 year old he still wakes up in the night and there is nothing I can do to make him feel better. When he was first born I couldn't put him down without feeling like the worst parent on earth for letting him cry. Now days...
