If you are a style geek or a fashion guru, you must have heard of Women’s Wear Daily, the country’s number one fashion newspaper. On April 28, 2005, the newspaper focused on student vogue across the country. Nine stories touched various aspects of student style, including dressing at sororities, fickle fads on campuses, fashion in women’s colleges, and the apolitical nature of youth clothing. Nisha Verma, a spring political science graduate, was among the trendy college-goers whose photographs covered nearly fifteen pages of the issue.
“A lot of my ideas come in bits and pieces,” Verma said, about her sense of style. “I’ll get an idea for an outfit because I watched Sex and the City and a Bollywood movie in the same day. I’m an ardent feminist, so I stay away from traditional fashion magazines. That’s not to say, however, that I don’t pay attention to fashion.”
She certainly does. Travelling in Spain, India, and England, has influenced Verma’s wardrobe. She also has her favorite style icons from the show business.
“I admire Kimora Lee Simons (designer for Baby Phat clothes line) and Free (host of Black Entertainment Television’s “106 and Park Show”),” Verma said. “As far as Indian actresses (Verma is of Indian origin), I love to see what Karishma Kapoor (a popular Bollywood actress) is wearing.”
In the University, Verma is more than just a pretty face. She has been an ASUN senator for the College of Liberal Arts, chair of the Administration and Finance Committee, and the chair of the Legislative Lobbying Committee. Verma was also the president of Young Democrats. She founded the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance and was one of its executive board members.
Verma’s academic achievements are equally impressive. A member of the Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honor Society, Verma’s been on the University’s dean’s list from 2002 through 2005. She also received the Zonta Club International Book Fund.
Most recently, she won the Outstanding Senior Award.
Despite all her achievements, a picture in Women’s Wear Daily was a surprise for Verma.
“I honestly did not think that I would end up in the magazine,” she said. “Since I am now a UNR alumnus, I am just thrilled that I was able to represent my university in a national magazine.”
So what is Verma’s fashion formula?
“It’s all about watching out for cheap prices and unique things, so as not to look like everyone else,” she said. “The only reason I have a sense of style is because I’m creative, and not afraid to take risks.” |
