disc space running short?

My computer often shows me a message that I am running out of disc space. What does it mean? Does it mean that that my hard disc is almost totally occupied by different programmes stored on it and has almost no space left to store...

I myself own laptop...and i work on it for long hours... software wise i usually download antivirus every week to have latest update then i check my disc,defragment it etc ,hardware wise i dust it frequently,will place my laptop...
