Does salt really kill fleas?

I dont know if this will work but I put salt all over my carpet. I read online that salt kills fleas. I hate using chemicals so I am looking for a safe way to get rid of them. Do you think it will work?

I use frontline plus on all of our cats to keep fleas and ticks off of them. Problem is, now all those fleas are in our carpet! Yikes!! What's a safe way to get rid of them? We have a bird and a fish, plus I have asthma so...
