can you tune an instrument by ear. i can. i guess it's my dads fault, he bought me my first instrument and they didn't have electronic tuners back then. do you use an electronic tuner to tune your instrument or just your ear

when i play the 1st string, instead of it saying eg. 1E, it is saying 4G... i just bought the electronic tuner yesterday and it was recommended as 1 of the best!!! I am so confused. How can i get it to say the correct string...
