What is a graphics card or graphic accelerator and which is the best brand?

I have some games which is not running on my system. My friends told me that happens when you don't have a graphic accelerator. I have intel chipset (inbuilt) but they say it is not enough.Please give me advice.

My friend has a Dell Motherboard(0M2035, i875 Intel chipset) and he needs the drivers for it, i have searched all over dells website and a few others for the drivers but found nothing, he does not have the cd, and I am wondering...
