Is it difficult to knit socks? I have heard that the ankle portion is a bit tough for the inexperienced. Is it true?

I am making an afghan and the instructions say "ssk" and this is described as "slip, slip, knit these 2 stitches together-a decrease". Is this the same as "k2tog"?
