What is a nerf herder?

Okay so I'm watching Star Wars and I wonder what a nerf herder is! Leia calls Han a scruffy nerf herder. A what? Do any of you guys have any ideas on what a nerf herder is? Perhapses a nerf is an unknown creature or something......

Who is your favorite secondary character from Star Wars?

By secondary I mean, no Luke, Leia, Padme, Obi-Wan, etc... Just a minor character who generated major interest. I'd say the cutoff point between major and minor characters might be Lando, if you get my drift.
