What is the best type of yarn to use to make pot holder

I have a lot of leftover yarn, and I am trying to find uses. I was thinking pot holders, but I am unsure as to whether acrylic yarn is a safe choice to use. If you have made potholders in the past, what types of yarn did you use....

Hi, I need to know what batting is called that is heat resistant. I want to make potholders for Christmas, but need to be sure I order the correct thing because I don't think I'll be going shopping in the near future.
