Reformatting a Vista Laptop? Or downgrading to XP?

Three days ago we reformatted a VISTA machine and it didnt went well. We got problems in finding the drivers because the Laptop only came with a Recovery CD. I deleted the old vista partition because it doesn't boot anymore...
