Life with the Big Dogs

Our Two Dogs are a Golden Retriever-Husky-Great Pyrenees mix and an Akita Inu, Rhodesian Ridge-Back, and Karnelian Bear Dog Mix. Both are sled/carting dogs. They pull enormous amounts of weight with little or no difficulty. The Golden has been working since he was six months old and is now 9yrs old and refuses to quit. We try to retire him and he becomes like a small puppy..whining, complaining constantly until we hitch him up with about 300lbs and run him for about 10 miles. (It's crazy but seriously ..this is what he loves to do). Meiko is two now and he is not quite a grown up dog yet, but is training wonderfully. He loves to put his 140lb weight into pulling and loves to run. He doesn't really know he's working and nobody is telling him. This picture was taken on Christmas day shortly after we finished building the sled you see in the picture. We now have a cart instead of a sled as there is not snow, but this is what we do for fun, and a mode of transportation that we use regularly in the winter time. The kids love it and are learning to drive the dogs themselves, but cannot yet control these two on their own...one is just too into protecting "his kids" and will not go if one of us is not either driving or on the cart.
