TigerSpirit A century ago, parasols(lace umbrellas to shade from the sun) were common place. If they sold them nowadays,I would happily get one. As it is, periodically, I'll use an umbrella on sunny days as I burn easily and don't want to get skin cancer.

Can you sleep when the lights are on?

I don't have problem if the lights are on or not, I can sleep either way. Of course most of us prefer turning off the lights to sleep more comfortably. I can't sleep only if I'm thinking something deeply.
