Cat Litter - Which One Do You Use, and Why?

I must have tried every cat littler under the sun. I remember the old days, when cat litter meant picking out the poop with a shovel, and mixing it around so that the urine got well- absorbed. Then after a week, you changed the entire box of litter and refilled it. What a horrible job it was! Nowadays I use scoopable cat litter, and find it to be both a boon and a nightmare. Firstly, you can scoop out the poo with a sifter-shovel, and the urine clumps up nicely. So no more embarrassing urine smells, hurray! However --- now that the clay is ground into such tiny specks, the cats can track it all over the house. I've put in litter mats, and that does hold it down some, but the majority of what I vacuum up is cat litter. The brands that I've used a loved: #1. Purrrcent generic brand at Waldbaums. At first this stuff was delightful. It smelled like sassafras or root beer, and had grains that were too big for the cats to track far. My bathroom was always clean, and my cats were happy. The stuff was cheap, too! It was nearly half the price of the big brand cat litter. Very little dust. #2. Arm and Hammer Multi-Cat. Darned stuff sucks up poop odors so well that you almost forget to clean the box. Grains are a little small, though. Dust is horrific. 3. Tidy Cats With Odor Crystals. I liked this stuff for the scent, but the grains are like specks of dust! However, not so dusty when pouring. Well, that's all I can think of besides Yesterday's News (Oh, man, what a mess!) and dang, can't remember the name of it, but it was made with pine wood. Litter Pine or something like that. It smelled good, but the pine shavings that burst open due to being peed on turned into mulch. It was another nasty mess. So tell us what you tried, why you liked it, and what you would prefer to use if you could get your hands on it for a reasonable price!

I am now trying Yesterdays News. My cat doesn't like it. She pooped outside her box today. I hate the dust of the scoopables. My next one to try will be the crystals. Ever tried those?

Yes, I did. They were terribly expensive. Then the cats use them. First I got a puddle under them. Aren't they supposed to absorb pee? Well, they didn't - not for a long while. Then the cats took a poop on them. Useless. The poo was on top, and stayed there. None of the cats wanted to bury their poo. Then after you scoop out the offending poo, some of the crystals remained poo-stained. Disgusting looking. And then there was Max, my diarrhea prone kitty. It flowed over, around, and under the crystals, leaving me with the mess from hell. oh, no never again! 'nuff said. :)

I only have one cat who stays in the house, the others are all strays that have wandered up or mine were born outside and that is where they have stayed. I use the store brand of scoopable litter. It does track some, but my Miss Baby is very picky it seems and tends to shake all her feet on the grass rug that the litter pan is on. I picked her up from a friend of mine that could not keep her and she has done this from the time I got her.

I only allowed thae cats a litter tray when they were kittens and were kept inside, these days, I expect them to go out through the catflap if they need to go out, we have a big garnden that leads onto the mountain so they have plety of choice as to where to go. I did find shredded junkmail quite handy as a low cost catlitter though when they were small.

I prefer to use Fresh Magic and Kitty Sand which are the crystal based Cat Litter. I find these much easier to use than the other types of litter, as you only need to change it once a month for one cat. And theres no dust to track accross the floor. They absorb the pee and you can flush the poo down the toilet as the crystals are biodegradable.

you should use the feline pine one it's really good you don't smell the pee as much as you do with other liters and it's health for the earth I used it with my cat and living in such a small apt everyone said you shouldn't have a cat cuz of the smell but they never complained

The absolute best cat litter as far as I'm concerned is Dr. Elsey's Precious Cat Ultra Clumping Cat Litter. It's a lot more course than a lot of clumping brands so it doesn't track nearly as bad. Also it seems to last longer than other clumping litters as well. The only bad thing I've found about it is that I can only find it at Petsmart and my nearest Petsmart is 50 miles away. I really stock up on it when I'm there though.

I either use Johnny Cat Multi-cat or Fresh Step...for me that seems to be the best..the worst in my mind is Tidy Cat--the clay kind--ugrh...it turns black when it's been ah.."used" LOL....as far as the scoopable cat litters...I hate them...they make more mess...yes, in a sense it's convenient just scoop out the poop and the clumps of pee....argghh..but it made like a muddy residue all over the place where the cats would track on the floor, and if it got wet on the floor etc..it turned like bits of cement to clean up--and to tell you the truth, I just don't think even my cats were too keen on it either...
