How can you become a freelance writer for magazines or newspapers?

What advice would you give a young person trying to become a freelance writer?

First of all, it's very competitive, so I would suggest learning as much about the trade and writing as you can. I'm not saying that you can't write or anything, but it's very competitive and you need to be the best you can. Also, try to get your work out as much as possible everywhere. And, be sure to get criticism on your writing, too. The links that the first respondent posted are good places to get started if you want to write for the internet. If you want to write for standard publishing, all I can say is study what they publish and try to write something they would want.
