Sanding by ear

Ok here is a question to crafters or woodworkers or anyone else that does any kind of sanding. Do you ever sand by ear? When I was a manicurist I developed the ability to sand the surface of the nails without looking. I could hear when it was done or time to switch grits. Of course I would check for any imperfection I may have missed but most of the time doing it by ear worked really well. Now I find that I can use that ability any time that I have to sand anything. Being a crafter and a polymer clay addict; I do plenty of sanding. So not having to stop constantly to check things saves a great deal of time. So do any of you have this ability?
