If someones legs swell and they retain water, waht could be the cause. This person has had tests for various things and they have all come back as fine. When feet, ankles and hands swell there must be an underlying cause. I think the doctor has run out of options and I wondered if any of you could give possible causes.

I have this problem. When I visited my doctor, he told me that my job was the cause, because I was sitting at a computer all day. He recommended that I do walking-type exercises whilst sitting at my desk, and to get up and walk around a bit, from time to time. He also recommended two miles minimum power walking each day. Apparently, this pumps the water around your body so that it doesn't all lie in one place. I don't work now, but I spend a lot of time at the computer still, and the problem has returned, but I find after a walk, the swelling has gone down. There are also some alternative medicine tabs called Waterfall, which are good for ridding your body of water. I don't know whether she can get hold of them, where you are. Brightest Blessings.

Thank you very much. The person does spend a lot of time sitting at a computer. I will look for that medicine because we much prefer alternatives to the things the doctor gives which have so many bad side effects. This is an extremely helpful answer.

You're quite welcome, Nannacrock. If you can't find the Waterfall product, maybe a word with your advisor in the Health Shop, or Herbalist, whatever you would call her? They can usually help with good advice.

First, the best person to consult is the doctor. Second, whatever you get from here is merely information, alternative information and not for you to take it seriously. Swelling on feet, ankles and hands normally something to do with the kidney functions. But if the doctor cannot find anything wrong than better seek second opinion. But not here, to real doctor.

Tests have ruled out liver and kidney problems. Obviously we will consult a doctor but, as ours has run out of options, I was intrested to know if they were other tests we could ask for.

Thanks, I have no intention of taking all answers seriously but I am a believer in alternative treatments and I can get ideas from others, then do my own research.

Probably what this person need is a good exercise. You can bring this person for a brisk walking may be 15 minutes for a start and gradually increase to 30 minutes per day. Hopefully, if this person sweats, it will reduce the water inside the body. Here in my country, if a person start to swell for no apparent reasons, we will consult a "bomoh" or witch doctor. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't. This is only for your information. Please do not take it seriouly. Thanks.

Since this person has had lots of testing already, I can assume that they ruled out any kidney, heart, and most other causes. One thing that's often missed is lymphedema. I have it from having lymph nodes removed from cancer surgery, and from the radiation treatments. I belong to a support group on the internet for it, and I was amazed at how many people had it from being in car accidents, and other more simpler type of accidents, that crushed or bruised lymph nodes. Here is a link to a website of one of our members, he has it set up with all kinds of information and links that will explain this a whole lot better than I ever could in a small space like this. There's also a page (somewhere there) that explains different types of swellings. I just thought I'd mention this possibility since it IS often overlooked. My lymph nodes were removed up by my heart, but my legs swell all the way down, abdomen, and quite often my arms, hands & fingers too. So, with that in mind, ask this person if they've ever fallen (down the steps, or whatever) or if they've been in any type accidents where they were hit hard. Hope this helps some on your search to find the answer. It might not be this at all, but like I said, quite often it's overlooked, and I find lots more Drs who don't have a clue about it than those that do. Holler if you need more explanations or links, I do a lot of hunting for other people all the time:o)

Thank you very much, this may be a cause and may be worth investigating.

Gee, I wish you the best of luck finding help for them. It's no fun dealing with swelling and having not a clue what's doing it. You said they sit a lot at the computer, so do I, and I swell more in my legs because of it. It helps some to get a foot stool to put under the computer to elevate and rest the feet on. Also, it'd probably help if they got up and walked around a little more often. For me, I do the 'sit awhile, lay a while, walk awhile' routine, and it's helped a lot. I wish them well!!

I agree with the other two who said the person needs to walk. Obviously I'm not a medical expert but I know someone who is and he says that sitting down not doing much is bad for your health and that not eating properly is also bad too, such as not having breakfast or lunch then having a dinner in the evening, instead he should have a biggish breakfast a small lunch and a proper dinner in the evening, but preferably before 6pm. I reccommend walking, like someone else said, that should get the water and the blood flowing again. The other thing I agree with is, if this doctor can't find out what's wrong this time, he needs to see a different doctor, or even the herbalist.

Just a quick suggestion. the body is keeping the water for a reason, right? like too much sodium or toxins. how about drinking 2litres of water during the day and check by day 3 if there is any improvement. your doc will agree with me on that. and mabey your friend should get regular diabetic tests done. i am one and water retention is part of my every morning. i drink that dreadful amount of water and the swelling subsides.

The water suggestion may help, thanks. He does have regular diabetes tests as there is a family history of it.

I also suffer from swolen ankles and feet. I havent been to the docotrs to rule out all other possiblities but i can tell you that i only swell when sitting with my feet dangling so i figure that it isnt an incredibly bad reason as to why they are swelling. But the swelling does stay with me for sometime if i dont prop them up and stuff. Many people tell me that it seems to ba all water retention and that they have over the counter water pills that may help. Good luck

Just curious if this poor person ever got any diagnosis and relief of what was causing the swelling. Hopefully they have found out, nothing worse than being kept in the dark about what's going on! Anyways, just thinking of you and wondering! Your friend Joy

Awwwww, I'm SO sorry they haven't found out what's causing this for him! Bless his heart, that must be rough, especially the not knowing 'why' part of it. Hopefully one day they'll figure out what's triggering his swelling. Tell him I think he's a 'swell' guy...we laughingly joke on our lymphedema forums that we're 'swell' people because we puff up with fluid a lot. (Maybe that'd give him a little smile:-)

No, all tests are coming back saying everything is ok. You're right there is nothing worse than not knowing, he has been told he's got Gilberts Syndrome, this was about a year after the doctor knew but they say that has nothing to do with the swelling. It's good to hear from you.

If the doctor has ruled out everything then you could try to get another opionion from a different doctor but I think looking at alternative remedies is better. If you go to your local homeopathy shop, they should be able to tell you what you might be able to do. The good thing about them is that a good homeopath will tell you if alternative remedies won't do anything and will recommend other possibilities if they can't help.

I wonder where the person lived. If you have been to othe doctor and the result turn out to be OK, indeed it really is puzzling. THe doctors won't tell you but they are pissed for not finding the answer too, becuase they know that something is wrong. There are possible reasons for leg swells: 1. Diabetes 2. Circulatory problems 3. Kidney disease 4. liver disease, and many others Since you've been yo the doctor, I guess we can rule these causes. I ask you in the very beginning where the patient live, because if he/she lives in the tropics, God forbid he has parasites living in his/her limbs that causes this - eliphantiasis. If he/she had traveled to the tropics lately, there is possible risk of infection too. These kind of reason are not normally look at by doctors in western countries since these rarely occurs there. I hope you'll find solution to the problem soon. Keep me posted. Keep safety...

Thanks for your response. All the causes you mention have been ruled out by the doctors. he's never been out of England so it's unlikely to be anything tropical. He will just have to keep going for tests until they find a cause.
