I hear alot on TV about people that write letters to people in jail. Some are friends after they start writing, and some actually start relationships and get together when the jailed person gets out! I don't understand that. Maybe I am too old fashioned or something, but I cant imagine getting into that. Would you do that? Do you know anyone that has?

Some people are pretty screwed up from their childhoods. They perhaps had parents that abused them physically, mentally, or emotionally, or perhaps, all three.
Yet they were too young to do anything to make their lives better and just had to live in a messed up family.
When they get older they spend all their time trying to find people they can make better. People like their parents who were messed up.
They couldn't heal their parents, so they try and heal the other losers of the world.

Nope- never! Ok let me rephrase that- If I knew the person prior to going into jail- and it wasn’t a major crime- like bad check writing- then maybe- : ) But I would never enter the write to a prisoner type of thing. Just not my cup of tea. I don’t know anyone who has ever done this either! Maybe we’re both old fashioned… or maybe we are just smart!

Yes, why not? They are human being like the others and in this way they'd feel less alone.
I never did it and I know no people did it, but I'd like to write to people who is in jail for an unfair reason like Leonard Peltier, for instance, the activist of American Indian rights who is in jail even if he did nothing bad.
Instead there are people in jail to whom I'd never write, rapers, for instance, but they are not people, they are beasts.

I would not write to anyone in jail unless of course by some misfortune it was a loved one. People who do this may be trying to be kind, but in the long run, they are placing themselves and their families in danger. It is somewhat selfish I think to do this if there are other people in your life. Regardless, I would not and I hope I never have a loved one in jail.
