How old were you when you got into photography?

My son is only seven and he has his own little Fujifilm digital camera. He wants a new one so he can learn to take better photos. In the meantime, he is practicing and we go out to local spots and try to 'shoot' different subjects. Today we were photographing ducks and mudhens and of course, woodpigeons and we met a very serious wildlife photgrapher. She was so impressed with my boy, that she showed him the ropes with her gear. Now, there is no stopping him! Whar about you? How did you get int photography? How old were you? Did you learn by trial and error, a class, or were you taken under someone' 'wing' like my little one was today?

As a kid, I always wanted a camera. So I got one, but I can never seem to make it work. Only when I grew up did I realise it was a toy camera that looks exactly like the real. I still don't have a camera - unless you count that in-built to my phone.

I remember being about 4 when I saw my uncle come out of his darkroom, looking at his film very intently. Right then I knew I wanted to do that too. I got my first little crappy point and shoot camera when I was 9, and by the time I was 1 5, I was taking photography in school, and shooting my teachers and their kids portraits lol.

I startedwith a Kodak Brownie camera when I was about 7 or 8. LaterI saved my money and and bought a Hawkey Camera that tok slide film and had a built in Flash. When I was in High School I bought an Exa II SLR camera for a cost of $36.00. Over the years I have owned several different cameras and now I am all digital and have shared my love with my children and now my 5 years old granddaughter is taking pictures with me and has even sold one of her candid shots. I am hoping that she will find the same joy and excitement that I have found in Photography.

Girl Golfer walking on the course - My 5 year old granddaughter took this photo and I cropped it and printed a copy for her teacher the girls mother and she bought it.
I forgot to add the photo my granddaughter took. She was using my small Canon A530.

That is brilliant and wonderful that you and your grandaughter can share the hobby together. Although, since she has sold one of her photos, she is actually a professional, isn't she? Her pic is great and isn't it funny the way it is angled. My son does that all the time, too!

We are using the same method, a camera everywhere, as well, so whenever the mood strikes, he can take his snaps. He loves it!

I was about that age when I started. We always had cameras around so I just started copying everyone and taking pictures. Now I am addicted to taking pics. I am not a pro nor do I have a nice high dollar camera but what I do have I can sure take some nice pics.

I have had a camera for as long as I can remember but of course this was in the days of film and processing and we couldn't afford to take too many photos but I took a lot of good photos even with my cheap little instamatic camera, but today digital, what a blessing that is, now I have a couple of bands I take photos for of their concerts and such, I usually take approx. 100 shots per gig, it so wonderful not to have to worry about the cost...

That is the best part about digital. My little boy can still learn from his mistakes, and see what works and what doesn't, and it doesn't cost a penny.

I started to get interested in photography when I was nine. I started off with a cheap camera and when my parents saw that I was taking my new hobby seriously, they bought me a better one. My mother was delighted because she loved photography and she showed me a lot of useful tricks. I still take photos on certain occasions, but not as many as when I was young.

I grew up with cameras going off all around me. ha ha My mother and my two aunts worked in photo processing and finishing. So, they could develop all the rolls of film that wanted for free. So...in turn...everyone in the family was camera trigger happy. ha ha Although, none were professionals. However, as I got older...say, 9th grade...I took photography as a course and fell in love with taking pictures and the dark room. I was always in the dark room even when we did not have an assignment due. I was always out taking pictures and experimenting. As I got older, and digital and computers merged with photography, I found a new love. Being able to take pictures and completely change them. Take a person out of one setting and put them into another. Then I became interesting in doing extreme art and making masks with makeup on my kids. Oh!! The fun my children have had with getting their faces made up to look like fairies and such. :) Professional classes...only that one in 9th grade. And that was a very very long time ago! I have learned through trial and error. I have read books and sat and stared at others' work. I love photography!!!!

I can really tell you have the bug, too! Kids are such great subjects, anyway, and as their godmother says, they have 'grown up on film'. Therfor they are completely natural and I get excellent candids of them that really capture their personalities. I love digitals, too, because you can just ditch the dogs!

I started out when I was only about 6 or 7 years of age with an old Kodak 126 lol Ive worked up the cameras as I have got older, now I am working with the SLR cameras, I prefer them to the point and shoot cameras, I think they really make you concentrate on what you are photographing. I have some of my work on my profile. Lynn-Marie

We have an SLR that I have gotten the hang of, but since I am usually either photographing kids, or supervising kids wherever we are taking photos, that pretty much rules out the SLR. Maybe someday...:-)

I don't think it is ever too late to start. I didn't much like it, either, until I had kids, and then I began to love capturing everything they did, and everywhere we went on film.

26. I'm just getting into photography right now. LOL. I've been researching techniques and ebooks on the net about this. I'm really interest in photography and I really think I have the talent to do it too. I'm downloading tutorials and everything but I doubt that I would get the hang of it soon because my Law school would be starting soon and I don't really think I could study two subjects at the same time.

My husband took a course at the London Guilds as well, and he has a very complicate SLR that I can use (but don't). It was kind of funny, because he has taken his formal course an dis supposed to know what he is doing. He had this big idea of when I was pregnant, taking a black and white photo every week in the same spot under an apple tree. The problem was, he used the same roll of film, so there were quite a few weeks on it by the time it was developed and nearly every single photo he took was HORRIBLE!! Thank god other people had also been taking photos or the whole period would have been lost!

I've always loved taking pictures. Now that I have a digital camera, I love it even more, because they don't cost me anything to develop, and I can do as I please with them, deleting the ones that don't turn out the way I want, and even editing the ones that I think I can save.

I also got into photography when I was really little. I got a little camera for my birthday one year, and I couldn't stop taking pictures. I always took pictures of really random stuff cause I was trying to be artistic or something. lol I never took any classes or pursued it as a career or anything after I got older, but I've still always had an interest in it and love it as a hobby.

Sophie - Here's an old one of my mom.
I was only 6 or 7 when my uncle gave me my first camera. It was used, but I thought it was the greatest gift in the world even though I had to wait to get the pictures developed. I think it was called a box camera. It looked like a box, as it was square. I took pretty good care of it for years, and took many pictures of my family, pets, and our house. My uncle showed me how to use the camera, how to handle the film, and how to aim and take a picture. Those old pictures didn't come out as good as the ones we have today with the digital cameras, but they are still nice to have for the memories.

I just bought a camera recently. So right now, I'm snapping away but since my camera is quite cheap, the photos are quite blur and not sharp. Besides, my hands are quite shaky when taking pictures! Right now, mostly I take pictures of scenery. You can check out some of my pictures at http://ifs3.imagefly.info/v/37/jpg/SUNP0085.html

I was young when I first started begging to use my mom's camera, but it wasn't until I was in my teens that it really kicked in that I loved taking photos. By the time I bought my first digital, I was hooked and wishing that I'd started so much sooner. Most of my knowledge comes from trial and error, but I also do a lot of reading articles online to get other people's tips. Kudos for letting your son get involved so young!

That's great. I didn't start photography until my senior year of highschool. It was my third year of art classes and the teacher did a 6 week photography unit including darkroom work. That was it. I had found my medium. My art teacher let me continue working in the darkroom the rest of the year while the other class worked on painting. I was there for the hour of class, sometimes during one of my other elective classes, and in the evenings until 5. Also, turns out my mom had been into photography in highschool but quit, so I got a great start with her old Minolta x-700 gear. As young as your son is I would say let him learn by trial and error. Maybe some photography books he could look at and get ideas and learn composition from. I recommend classes when he's older, if he's interested in using more advanced equipment or digital editing programs.

It sounds like you found your true love! Do you still shoot a lot? I am tryint o point out basic notions of composition to him, and lighting, and he seems to be picking it up very naturally. I love seeing him troop around whith that camera taking pictures of all sorts of strange things adults would never think of.

I've been doing less photography lately because I recently moved and don't have access to a lab that will let me do my own printing and framing, which makes it very expensive unless I'm selling a lot and I'm not at a good point in my life to start my own business, though I do make some money on the side shooting portraits and head shots.
