The second commandment

I was raised in a Catholic school up until my teens. As such, I was made to memorize the Ten Commandments. This is the list I grew up with. 1) I am the Lord your God. You shall not have any other gods besides me. 2) You shall not use the name of the Lord your God in vain. 3) Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy. 4) Honor your father and your mother. 5) You shall not kill. 6) You shall not commit adultery. 7) You shall not steal. 8) You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 9) You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. 10) You shall not covet your neighbor's goods. Twenty years later, God changes my life, and I am inspired to read the Bible. This is the list I discovered. "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of hose who hate me, but showing love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." - Exodus 20:2-17 (with a similar reference found in Deuteronomy 5:6-21) Notice anything different? Hint: it's the title of this discussion. Why do you think that is?

Funny I was going to start a similar discussion. Guess now I probably won't. Do you want the truth or do you want me to sugar coat it? Well here is the truth.... If they left that part in about the idols then they could not continue to worship Mary and the saints. Light their candles and all the other idolatry that goes on and is ignored. Not only ignored but defended.

I find it ironic that the Catholic Church that uses the Bible to defend its heavily criticized practices and beliefs--such as Mary being the Mother of God (Genesis 2:23) and the church (John 19:22), and Mary's role as intercessor (John 2:5), the authority of priests to forgive sins (John 20:23), the baptism of babies (Acts 2:38-39), and others too many to mention here--is the same Catholic Church that maintains that the Bible alone is not the basis of faith (1 Timothy 3:15). This is no exception, because the Catholic Church justifies making images (Exodus 25:18-20, Numbers 21:8-9, 1 Chronicles 28:18-19). Only in the case of the Ten Commandments, the Second Commandment was (conveniently?) ommitted! At least that was what I was taught in Catholic school. No wonder I was having a hard time catching up with the count in the Charlton Heston movie!

The 10 Commandments I was taught by the Catholic church do not have the 2nd commandment that is in the bible. I have noticed that they do use scripture to support their beliefs but they tend to leave out the parts that don't support them. Life infant baptism they say that the bible says "repent and be baptized EVERYONE OF YOU". Well it does but they seem to forget that the first word of that is repent. Babies can't repent.
