Deja Vu -- Gas Prices and The War.

I can recall a time in America when people lined up to get their gas and the war in Vietnam was only just truly ending.
It was very hard back then, and it seems that the same thing is happening today.
I feel sick to my stomach when I recall the anger that was raised everyday as a result of a "useless war", and the instability of the country during the gas shortage.
We are really right back in the same situation again!
It took a long time to recover from it.
I don't know if the May 15th boycott will do any good, in fact, it may drive prices even higher. The government is working on it, but they won't get drastic until Americans can no longer afford to go to work, buy food, and pay their rent. You'll see, there will be widespread reports of homelessness, shelters being filled to capacity, and families will be lining up for free food. It sounds like the great depression, doesn't it?
Do you feel the same thing?
Do you think it will get worse, or better?

I am sorry for the feelings you have on the Viet Nam war,I am a Canadian Viet Nam veteran, and am proud to have been there.
on the topic of gas prices, this has nothing to do with the war,it is total greed by the gas companies,if they were told by the government to disclose the number of capped wells there are and how much oil and gas is underground, our gas could be in the neibourhood of 0.25cents a gallon.
Of course, the governmet will not say anything as they are getting so much from their taxes on gas, that it would just make them find some other means of stealing money from the people.
Thank you for the discussion.
Blessed Be.

I recall the gas shortages and all that was related to it. In the 30 some years since then, we have pretty much taken energy for granted. If we really would have tried as a country, we could be free of OPEC oil by now and probably have less reason to be in Iraq. The government has failed to come up with a comprehensive energy policy and so we face the situation we are now in. There are lots of things we can do to ensure a stable energy supply, but most people will not make the needed lifestyle changes. It might get down to people living in their big old monstrous SUV's because that will be all they can afford...lol. What do you think the government is going to do? They won't be able to save this country. For any problem that comes along, they always raise taxes. That is their solution. You can't really blame the oil companies, if they didn't exist, there would be no one to get the oil out of the ground and refine it for consumer use. I am not thinking there will be a depression; moreless some major changes in how we live and use energy.

Well if my memory is severing righ the gas prices didn't go up before until after the Vietnam war. The lines for gas, the shortages and such were during the Carter Administration and the war was already over by then.
As for today I agree with mac1946. The gas prices don't have anything to do with the war itself. It's the gas companies that are to blame. Look at the record profits they are recording for the last few years, profits that they got because of us. They know we have little choice and that we need the gas. Until we can as a whole go without gas for some time they will continue to make such profits. I doubt the boycott on the 15th will do any good. They know about it. They know that even if we don't buy on that day we will another. If we could go a week or better yet a month without buying even half of what we normally do that might open their eyes but a one day boycott? Nah they won't even blink.

I think that it'll not be worse because the USA is able to what Humanity even not dreamed about...Imagine the 911,who will think that something like this will happen, they've plan it and they make it...it's just unbelievable.
They have planned for the soviets ,they've done it...
Iraq will belong to the past it's sure because they can do more than iraq.
They have money to feed the whole world free so it's not the population of the USA that will give then problem.Things will go better for some years and will come back when it'll be necessary.
When I say THEY,I'm talking about big boys in the shadow...

I think will continue to worsen. I dont think the May 15th boycott will help. People will just buy gas on the 14th and 16th instead. If we could all go without buying gas for a week maybe it would have an impact. WE have already cut our grocery budget to 30.00 a week. Any lower and we will be eating nothing but Ramen noodles all month. We are moving closer to my husbands work which will cut our gas costs alittle if the prices remain steady. I hope we end this war soon and start worrking on rebuilding our own country.

It can get worse if all of us, especially our governments will allow it. Heaven forbid, I hope that the "war" scenario you pictured would not happen in our lifetime...The May 15 boycott of gasoline use is interesting to watch...It can succeed if everyone cooperates...it's just like a "silent scream" , a protest over the rising prices of oil all over the world. We hope it would succeed though so that the miseries to our people brought about by oil price increases will end, if not minimized. Hope that the Great Depression will never happen again....

ah yes, remember our parents having either odd or even days in which they were permitted to buy gasoline. Sure would make it difficult to go on a road trip, huh?
I think it will continue to get worse unless something drastic is done. We are a major producer of oil ourselves and there is no reason that we need to be so dependent on the oil producing countries. I think we need to somehow just not purchase from them for a while. If they want our patronage back then they can meet us at a reasonable cost and by law not be permitted to raise oil prices by more than a certain percentage in any given time frame.
I especially do not like that corn ethanol is being highly promoted. it kind of rots when your governor is insisting that ethanol be made law and your car manual says not to ever use ethanol as it damages your engine.
corn prices and products will sky rocket. dairy and beef farmers will either quit raising cattle or the prices will be too high to feed them.
gas will get 30% less efficiency.
augh, too many ramifications.
