Do certain smells bring back memories?

Just last night my fiance had some of his friends over. One of his friends was drinking Red Bull and didn't finish it and left it sitting on my kitchen counter. When I poured it out this morning it made my whole kitchen smell like Red Bull. The smell of Red Bull reminds me of when I was bartending. We used Red Bull all the time as bartenders. Granted that's not exactly good memories but it brought me back a little. So are there certain smells that bring back memories for you? If so, what are they and what do they remind you of?

Pea soup and fresh baked bread, that smell brings back happy memories of coming home from school to that good good soup and bread. Pine smells like christmas, and new fallen snow. making snow men, riding sleds down hills. Blue Waltz perfume, my daddy would give each of us girls a tiny bottle of it for christmas.

A certain aftershave reminds me of my ex-hubby so that's a bittersweet memory. The smell of driving on a dusty dirt road reminds me of that last summer before I had to "grow up". I had just graduated from high school, had my own little car and my ex-hubby and I were dating. We always took all the short cuts across dirt roads to save time and gas and because well...teenagers don't mind "breaking down" or "getting stuck" on back roads late at night! The other smell that brings back memories is hard to explain but it's a mix of dust, exhaust and other car smells. It reminds me of going to the races with my s/o. Our youngest is too little to go and he doesn't take a bottle yet so I can't leave him with a babysitter but I miss being at the track every Fiday night with my s/o.

It often happens to me certain smells getting me some memories, two strong ones are: the smell of the ground when starts rainning, but just in algave, a region in the south of portugal, remembers me my childhood in africa. Also in that singular region, the smell of the sea remembers me the sea in africa. These smells are not as strong as in africa but they are quit like it and it is wonderful the "feel this smells". Not just the smells gets me memories, a particular collor blue remembers me school, but i dont know why.... :)

Yeah it does :) That fresh smell cold spring/late-summer mornings usually include takes me back to when I was in elementary, especially the first couple of years there. I always had to wake up early cause I had a long way to walk to school, and as we lived in the suburbs there were lots of cherry trees and all kinds of plants growing everywhere. I remember always daydreaming when I walked to school so..yeah, good times :) Weirdly enough I rarely notice that smell anymore... Guess it's growing up :(

YES! I am definitely reminded of a smell of a t-shirt that has just been washed with a detergent powder. That smell really reminds me of somebody I really miss. I miss my bestfriend who separated from me two years ago. I was with him since 1st year college. He had been a GREAT friend!:) He has always been sweet, thoughtful and he was always there whenever I needed him. I cry to him almost all the time. Then he had to leave for the States for good. And the only thing that reminds me of him is his smell is his shirt where I cry there all the time. *sniff*

That's true! Actually many things can remind us, not only smells. To me, I think music can often remind my old days, especially the old songs...:)

We all are associated with senses, all we remember is directly link to what we can see, small, hear and touch... Big sea shells are remaining me of my childhood...

I love the smell of baking bread, as it reminds me of my mothers kitchen during the holiday season, as we would make at least 20 loaves of bread. We would give a loaf of bread to each of our friends and a jar of homemade jam. One year I stomped all of the grapes and my mothers ceiling is still purple. When a person walks in and looks up, my mother laughs and tells them why only part of her ceiling is purple.

Hi,cynddvs! I believe certain smells can bring back memories. Our whole body can memrize everything,so that certain smell can recall our memories. A certain smell of a sport perfume can make me recall the memory of me ex-boyfriend and I.When he was my partners,he always wore a certain sport perfume everyday. The smell could make me feel peaceful and calm down.Though now we have broken up,but when I smell the certain sport perfume,I will remember him.

The areas of brain for perception of smell have a connection to memory.. Infact all the senses have.. Even sights , sounds and touch , temperature... can bring back memories :)

Beyond(a band)'s music remainds me of my adolescent stage.Beyond is a very popular rock band in China in the 1980s and It reached the peak period in early 1990s. But in 1993 the lead voice fell from the stage and was fatal hurt during a TV show in Japan. Fewdays later, News reported that he had passed away. It's always a sad moment whenever his voice came to me.

Everytime I smell lilacs it reminds me of when my mom came to stay with me to help out as I was getting ready to have my second son. She took a walk down the street, and stole some lilacs from one of the neighbors, and put them in a nice vase for me. I remember the smell of those lilacs as I started going into labor, and they started to make me sick. My mom and I used to laugh about that for years, because she thought she was doing something nice for me, but it made me sick. They were beautiful though. I'm glad my mom didn't get arrested for stealing lilacs!
