Do you have a favorite "instant" staple

that you can cook to go with almost anything, with very little preparation? I keep instant brown rice on hand. It has more fiber than regular or instant white rice. I like the long cooking brown best, but this is good in a pinch. You can cook it in broth and add veggies, or bouillion and veggies. It can be cooked with dried fruit and served for breakfast. Season it like you do homemade dressing or stuffing. It can be ready in ten minutes, and it is not very expensive. It is easy to make a quick side dish with most any meal.

I dearly love to use instant mashed potatoes. One of Mark's workers, Bumpy, says he hates instant and won't eat them but whenever I make dinner for Mark to take to work he shares it with others, as well as, Bumpy and he raves about the food all the time. I don't think Mark has ever told him that he's been eating instant mashed...lol

My daughter is a macaroni and cheese fanatic. I keep that on hand at all times, and add in things like broccoli, mushrooms, and sometimes, even fruit!

That is really interesting. For some of my clients I make "Pizza casserole" out of mac and cheese. I put in a little pepperoni, about a half cup of spaghetti sauce or pizza sauce. Spread it in a baking dish, top with mozzarella. Nuke it or bake it til it is warm with melted cheese on top. I would not have thought of fruit, but I should not be surprised as some eat cheddar cheese with apples.

Both are very good, I do that a lot, too. I will throw a handful of oats into my pancake batter, as well. It is so healthy and gives a nice texture.

For us, it would have to be Potatoes. I am a Potato nut, and I Love Potatoes just about any way that one can cook them. You never know when I might want Potatoes, and they are quick and easy to do, so that is why I keep them around. Makes me want to go and Cook up some right now even.

Instant mashed potatoes, while not as good as the real thing are a great staple to have around. They are hot, filling and can be doctored up in all kinds of fun ways.
I think I like gravy with mine the best, but I also like cheese, or roasted garlic and a friend even turned me onto having mashed potatoes with ranch dressing!
you can also used the instant mashed potatoes to make potato fritters, or as a topping for a version of shepards pie. I sometimes make a "leftover" version of this dish. It's usually pretty good, and a great way to use up other leftovers.

Gerty, I keep instant brown rice on hand, too. My other favorite staple is whole flax seed. I have a special spice mill just to use for grinding flax seed fresh, and I put it in everything I bake, including pancakes, corn muffins, and even pizza dough. What amazes me about flax seed other than the wonderful nutrition is that as unpleasant as the odor of freshly ground flax seed seems to me, anything it is baked in has a wonderful flavor.

I bought a separate electric coffee grinder to put my flax seed in when I grind it. My husband really enjoys the fact that I add extra nutrition and flavor to so many things, just as you do. Eating good and being healthy can be quite easy.

Yes, exactly! When I bought the Magic Bullet, then I dedicated my old Tribest blender to seed, grain, and spice grinding. In addition to the flax seed, I usually add a handful of oat flour made fresh ground from oatmeal which is also always on hand as a staple in our home.

Rice, I agree with. Pasta too, is easy to prepare. Also a tin of brown lentils, or red dried lentils. Potatoes go a long way of course. I always have bread available.+
I love my food!

I agree that rice is an excellent staple & we use it quite a bit.
For my family, as we were growing up, potato was our staple food. We had it with every main meal.
Mahed potato was the most common. Roast potatos were our favourite.
We also grated potato & made potato cakes, which were fried.
My current family, also has potato as it's staple.
I use it on lots of dishes. For instance, shephards pie, has a layer of mashed potato on top.
I think we get our reliance on potato comes from our Irish heritage.

Give me some potatoes or pasta and I can whip up a meal quickly. I have taken veggies from our garden and added them to pasta and it is quick and tasty. I love to cook in summer when the garden is harvesting. Yummy

Oh Gerty, I love rice and thought I should give brown rice a go. I'd heard it took longer to cook but it takes ages. I didn't particularly like the texture either, it is still a firm rice even after cooking, also, I didn't particularly like the flavour. Apparently, it's also the taste one has to become accustomed to. I've not seen "instant" brown rice but I'm prepared to give it a go if I find some. I really like pasta as well.

It may be a taste that is hard to acquire for some. You can mix it up with white to get used to it. I get mine at Wal Mart.

My favourite "instant" is bread. It is readily available any time of the day as we had a loaf of wholemeal bread delivered daily. I only need to have it toasted if I do not want to eat it plain with spreads. Throw in a slide of cheese, couple of leaves and tomato plus some slices of fruit, I had a big "MAC" vegetarian version.
