When my son was old enough to mow the lawn he would cut it alright but when it came time to rake up leaves off the ground he fought it tooth and nail. Then one day I had asked him to do this once again and he turned around and looked at me and informed me that God had put the leaves on the ground let God take care of getting rid of the leaves. I turned around and went in the house and the reason I didn't push the issue is because I had to get out of his sight because the laughter was bubbling up in my throat.
Then my mom was telling me about the time she told my sister to wash the dishes and my sister put her hand on her hips and informed mom that there wasn't any use in washing the dishes they would just get dirty again.
I loved the response my mom gave to her which was that there was no sense in her cooking because people would just get hungry again. Mom said my sisters mouth fell open and she didn't know what to say. She just turned around and started to wash the dishes. I cracked up laughing and told mom good response to her.

that is funny!! kids are hilarious!!!
one day, when my now 10 yr old was about 2 or 3, she argued with me that it was her turn to drive to the store that i always get to and that isnt fair. i wasnt sharing is what she said. i laughed so hard and still do when i think of the fit that she threw because she felt it was her turn..lol.
my 2 yr old told me the other day to shut up you pain in the as*....i had to run out of the room to laugh at that one. so they hear things somewhere and remember them and then repeat them too.
kids say the funniest things!!! for sure!!!

yes, this world is filled with routine work. there are times when we get tired of doing them. so we try to get a break from it by complaining. your mother has been so witty to be able to come with all those replies at the appropriate time... i bow unto her. our kids, we will really have to talk to them about some facts of life from time to time. this is such a good post, sunshinelady. i have learned so much from this one. my thanks.

My mom was the queen of coming back with retorts to us kids. She never got mad just got her say so in. Most of the time it left us kids speechless. Like another time my sister and I wanted to go do something with our friends. It was not something she would have let us do even by ourselves. She said no. We looked at her and told her that our friends were doing it. All she told us was that if our friends went and jumped off a bridge would we do it. We went outside and sat on the steps and looked at each other and made the comment where does she get all of these sayings!

Thanks for the compliment. There are days I just start thinking about the way mom raised us kids and a smile comes to my face. My mom is still alive but memories just flood into my mind at times. It is not unusual for me to call her and talk about when I was younger and how she raised us. We both have good laughs over it.

I think your mom knew my mom as she always said either the "jump off the bridge" or "jump off the roof" in reply to doing something with our friends. How easy for us back then if only we had known. These posts are great for breaking up the day and the humor.

My mother's favorite way to try and get us kids to finish our food was, "Think of all the starving children in Europe (this was the 50's) who would love to get this food but can't." I distinctly remember being about 6 and having my sister sent out to me with that familiar phrase on her lips. Now, I'd NEVER have said this directly to my mother, but my response to my sister on that occasion was, "Well, give me their address and I'll send it to them!"

That was my seniment exactly. Because my mom would say the same thing to us. I would lean over to my sister and tell her that we needed to find these people so we could give them the benefit of this great food( of course, this was said very sarcastically). My mom came up behind me and told me that if I had something to say say it so everyone could hear it. Keep in mind my mom is 5 ft and 4 in. But let me tell you she was heck on wheels and all of us kids knew the signs that mom had had enough and it better stop. They say dynomite comes in small packages. I can verify that. My mom was dynomite!

Did these mothers take the same course in responses? Probably a direct result of the "Great Depression". My mom said the same about food too. My mom wore hearing aids in both her ears, and believe you me, there wasn't much she couldn't hear. There were seven of us and she knew which one said what.

In the 80s, the starving children were in Africa, and my response was "How will it help them if I eat my greens?" Mom didn't appreciate it, but the starving children is one I've never used on my own kids.

That's a good one! I'm going to have to remember that one about not cooking cause folks will just get hungry again. I'll bet she never complained about the dishes again. My kid isn't old enough to give me that kind of grief about chores, but I know that my day is coming when she will be more than happy to back talk. On that day, I'll know that it's just payback for the grief I gave to my mom!
