I am so happy: just hired for my first English to Italian translation!!

My friends here know that I like English and that I keep on studying English until I pass the highest English examination for people of other languages..I don't know if I told you, that I was trying to become a professional English to Italian translator. I am familiar with English, I am Italian and I am a doctor so I started applying to agencies looking for medical translations and general subjects English translations, too...I got no reply until yesterday when I was hired for a medical translation..I am so happy because it is my very first job in this field..oh I mean this is the first time I am paid because I am used to translating everyday for my students, or my supervisors at University but they never paid me for this or recognised my ability. So you can imagine how happy I am. I hope everything is going well and they will pay me!!!
Just wanted to share this little success with you and tell you seeking a job: never give up!!!

Wow Maribea, congratulations!
It isn't easy to find in Italy a person who can translate well from English to Italian, I have to say that you really studied a lot!
I can see your happiness, in Italy we are always forced to work "free" and the fact that somebody will pay you for your translations is really very good!

Yes, in fact, you know.... we are in Italia here.... and compliments again for the fact that you can translate works with medical terms, this must be very difficult....

i am glad that yougot it maribea. we here, know about your expertise in English languaqe (you are probably, one among a few, who actually make sure to render proper punctuations, syntax and Caps). i am sure, with this kind of credibility you will going do a great job as a translator. I did one medical transcription course and kind of liked it and i think, your job as a medical tranlator will be a very challenging one aswell.

thanks for your word, kind as always..I like very much my job and I like English so I found it easy and interesting starting with this kind of translations..I hope I can go on and also move to other fields like literature and general subjects because I am so fond of books!!!

Congratulations on getting the first job of translation for which you would be paid. I can understand how you must be feeling. This is a recognition that you are a professional translator. But, I wonder, would you have enough time to do the translation? It is a slow and time consuming job. It can be very tiring also since you would be required to refer to dictionatry so often.
Looks like you are a professor in a medical college. You must be very busy. good luck to you.

oh I am a very hard worker. I am doing translations for my medical work everyday ...no need to worry about doing it when being paid!! medical translations are very easy for me because I am a physician and general subjects translations are a challenge and I am eager to prove me while doing them ...I would like to do some literary translation because i love literature, too. I can work at night..this is both relaxing and remunerative and I can avoid work if it is too much for me!!!but u

Hello,maribea,I am sure you must be a very smart person,not only being a doctor,you are also very good at languages ,the passing of the highest english examination has proved everything:) I think you will do your job very well.
You are right,when we are applying a job,we may get frustrated at times,but we will be rewarded if we hang on until the last moment.

my dear friend, I didn't pass the highest English examination, not yet...I am studying toward Proficiency in English. Anyway, thank for your kind words and being so supportive. I hope this work will be a good work to start with because it is easy for me doing medical translations and i like the idea of combining my two passions. English and medicine..maybe little by little I am finding more, let's say literary translations, too because i like reading and literature, too

Being able to translate is a great gift. My husband is multi-lingual. He can translate Dutch and German to English. He speaks many languages, but has problems translating.

I can easily translate general conversation or medical ones when speaking and of course I can easily translate from English to Italian when medical subjects or general subjects or literary ones are concerned and I think that if I start doing professional translations I can only improve!!!

Hi Doc,
I want to congratulate you with your new job. You know, I'm from Willemstad Curacao, The Netherlands Antilles. Here we can speak, Papiamento this is my native language, Dutch with is our educational language, Spanish my wife comes from Latin America, Colombia and last but not least, English. There are people who can also speak some German, and French. I don't dare to say that I can understand Italian, but some words sound very familiar to me due to the fact that I can speak Spanish. You do have a nice and juicy Language.

with your language knowledge you can certainly try and work in the translation field if you want...I wish I could speak more languages..I can understand Spanish but I am afraid I cannot speak it unless you mean saying just a few words speaking Spanish..but I intend to start studying it as soon as I can because I love the sound of this language and I have a close Spanish friend...

Congrats :-) Translation is a very interesing field I've been thinking of getting into it as well. Only problem is that everyone in Denmark speak english very well, so it's hard to get a job as an english / danish translator.

oh you can apply for translations online so you can get into contact with people from all over the world..sure there is plenty of people out there who can need a good English to Denmark translator...at least you can try and then judge by yourself..of course it needs time and patience!!

my dear friend thank thank you very much..you got the meaning of it..I like so many things and it seems that I want to learn always something new..it is never enough for me..so while fighting to gain my place in the neurological field here in University (which is very difficult) I thought I could do something better than crying my soul out because of all the inconveniences and troubles I am getting through. And now this is my first success in this new field..it is just a little thing..but it is very important for me and i don't think this is the last thing I am trying!!!!

That's great news, Maribea. I knew that with your level of English that you'd eventually find the work that you were looking for. I don't get it. You are a doctor and you are working with translations? Or are you still taking classes for becoming a doctor?
It is nice to do translation work, but if you a doctor you should look for a job as a doctor. And if there are no job places in Italy you can always came to Portugal since they have shortage on medical staff and a lot of Spanish doctors are working here.

I am already a doctor and a neurologist too and I am on my last year as a PhDstudent in neuroscience. I have already a work as a doctor here n Italy but I am looking for a more suitable one and while waiting for it to come I am doing some translations too because I like English and I like medicine and I like doing medical and literary translations. I assure you there is nothing bad in this and i am happy I got my first job as a translator...If I don't find a suitable job as a doctor here in Italy, sure I need to go away but this is my last option because I am happy in Italy..and I am sorry but I don't know the Portoguese so I don't know how I could apply for a work in this marvellous country I was so happy to visit

congrats my fellow italian :) And I thank you for your effort because you translate something you're familiar with (I mean some translators have a language degree and don't know what they're tranlating thus making errors especially in books for scientific university courses).

yes you are right. In fact when studying medicine at University I preferred reading my books in English better than in Italian because they sometimes hire translators that don't know anything about medicine and therefore they end up making a mess...it is high time they understand the need of properly trained translators for scientific and technical translations..let's hope for the best!
