I always did the cakes for my boys' parties. If they were into building toys (bulldozer, etc) the cake was chocolate with milk chocolate frosting. I would put some green sprinkles to look like grass patches and some new matchbox construction toys on the 'site'. When they liked ninja turtles, I had a green cake with little turtle action figures. My son was going into the military soon after his birthday and i did the frosting to look camo and put a army action figure on it. One game for the party might be 'Pop the Balloons'. Put a nickel or dime and a couple pennies in each balloon (some quarters if the party is small). Blow them up. When it's time, have the kids sit on the balloons to pop them and get the prize inside.

What is he into and what's your budget? I usually do about $100 for a party, b/c we invite a lot of kids. Some ways to cut costs: Bake and decorate the cake instead of ordering from a bakery. You can get kits at Michael's if you aren't a great cake decorator. Skip the decorations. The kids don't really look at them anyway. Skip the themed plates, napkins, treat bags. It all goes in the trash later. You can buy 20 solid color plates at WalMart for the same price as 8 themed plates. There's a good variety of colors, so you can match almost any theme (for a Superman party, for example, we bought blue plates and cups and red napkins). Treat bags are brown lunch bags with stickers matching your theme. You can do 50 bags for the price of about 8 of the themed treat bags. We always invite the entire class, so this is a big savings for us. Where you want to spend your time/money is on activities, b/c if the kids have fun they will remember the party. Even that doesn't have to be expensive. Lots of traditional games are easily adapted to a theme. Pin the tail on the donkey has become Pin the S on Superman's chest, Mr. Funnybones has lost his funny bone (monster party), Put the bat signal on the moon (batman), and pin the tail on Eeyore. A treasure hunt in which the kids as a group follow a series of clues has become Find Princess Ariana's lost golden slippers (princess party), Rescue Superman (older sister in a paper mask, trapped under a bit of "kryptonite"-actually a green glow stick), and a basic treasure hunt with a papier mache coffin full of treats (ScoobyDoo party). We've done a Webwalk at a Spiderman party, and a flower walk at a spring party, both variations of a cakewalk. Paper numbers in a shape that matches the theme, with treats instead of cakes. This one's good b/c you can fudge the number drawn if everyone hasn't won anything after a few rounds. For a Spongebob party I once put out a tub of clean sand with little toys buried throughout and each child had a timed interval to find treasure. If you post your theme, I will probably have a couple of game ideas. I try to stay away from games with winners and losers, and definitely don't have prizes for the "winners" if we do have any competitions. I don't usually do party favors aside from the treat bag, which is most often filled as part of a game. My kids think they have to have a pinata (btw-pinatas are made to be hit by 50 or so kids, so the adults or older siblings often end up breaking them, but the littles have fun anyway), so we do that most often. I put in little toys as well as candy. When we haven't done a pinata, I've had the kids find a treasure chest or some other way for them to fill their own treat bags. You can buy a couple of bulk bags of candy for the pinata fairly cheaply. For toys, skip the party aisle and go to the toy department. There's an aisle of cheap toys like bouncy balls, jewelry, etc. Go for the multi-packs-9 bouncy balls for $1 is pretty good. The mini bottles of bubbles are also a hit.
