I would much rather for someone to tell me the truth than to lie to my face. I hate when someone tells me to have a nice day when I know deep down they cannot stand me and they really wish that I would just fall of of the face of the earth. I also get my feelings hurt to if someone tells me to get lost but at least they are honest and not playing games with me. I guess I would rather be told to get lost if I had to choose.

I'd go for neither. LOL I hate lying but I refuse to be treated rudely. So I'm gonna have to say NEITHER!

LOL.. It's true though. Who really means, "have a nice day". It like just rolls of the tongue.. like "I'm fine thanks" when really you are agonising about something. Another that couples use "I love you too!" - There are times when no matter who we are with, we are just simply not in touch with that feeling "I love you too". We just say it, for not to say it would cause a few problems.. What little liars we can be - LOL.
Now, "Get lost" well you don't need to wonder where you stand with that person. The problem however, would be ours, not theirs. They would be simply respecting us by giving us the truth. Wouldn't they? Ah, but that's not what we would like to think though is it? They woud be nasty, horrible, outspoken, truthful people.
I would nominate for my self, "get lost". That way I would have an opportunity to resolve my issues with rejection. So the "get lost merchant" would be giving me that opportunity and would therefore be a "Zen master" for me. The truth will set you free... Eventually! LOL

To get lost by someone who does mean it! I can normally tell if someone is lying to me about having a nice day, anyway. Unfortunately, sometimes they're forced to say it (by their employer) and I suppose it's still polite.

I would far rather be told to 'have a nice day' by someone for whom it is just a formula because it gives me a chance to smile and wish THEM a nice day - with feeling! A number of times when this has happened, it has made the other person aware of their mechanical repetition and has made them laugh, which, I hope, did a little to brighten their day.
If someone tells you to get lost (and they usually mean it), there is very little one can do in return except to quietly get lost! There is really not a great deal of opportunity for a positive response ... except to (ironically) wish them a nice day!

I am rather too fond of irony, too. I regret the fact that this may mean that one is returning an honest (but rude) comment with a pointedly insincere one.
I do know what you mean, though, about being told to 'have a nice day' by people who either couldn't care less or actively dislike you. One can usually tell, though, if it is a mindless politesse or a vindictive 'Have a nice day [and I hope that mine is all the better for not having to deal with you]' type of comment!

"Have a nice day" is harmless and I dont care whether someone says it or not. However "get lost" is a whole different story because to me these are fighting words.

If you're talking in shops, I consider it "standard" if not "necessary" to be friendly and polite towards the customer at all times! I think its pretty much a part of the job if you choose to work in retail. If a shop assistant ever told me to get lost, I'd go mental. Bad customer service often puts people off shopping in a store ever again, so it would be a foolish attitude to have! x

I think most will say that someone to have a nice day who doesn't mean it is preferable.Actually very less people are there who wat to hear true things, very less people like to have honest companion .So if the truth is that harsh then most will run away from them. But i would prefer honesty as i am straight forward person myself.
