Do you ask for paper or plastic? do you bring your own cotton totes? what is your preference for "bagging" up your groceries, why? I usually like to opt for heavy duty cardboard boxes (I think they are like banana crates) these can fit a lot of groceries into one box, and the boxes stack neatly in my car - they do not topple over! In the warmer months the cold foods stay better insulated against heating up in the cardboard than they do in plastics. Also, with the box I can use them at home for various tasks.

I usually just get plastic bags, or sometimes boxes if there is any. I have quite a few cotton shopping bags at home, but i always forget to take them with me. They were going to bring in that we would have to pay for our plastic bags, but it hasnt happened. It was to do with saving the environment. Where i used to live, the little corner store used to charge for their plastic bags, and all the funds raised went to improving the park opposite the store for the kids. I thought this was a great idea. Best wishes to you

that is a really cool idea! I think Aldi's will charge for each bag you use - so a lot of people will bring their own sacks or pack up in boxes if they can find any. I haven't been to an Aldi's in quite a while. We used to shop at a store in upstate NY called Shop n Save. They would credit you 3 cents per bag that you brought in yourself. That was a good enough incentive to re-use.

We have Aldi here too. They do charge for their bags. I am not near one now unfortunately. At least their bags are good quality and you can use them again. The idea of crediting when you bring your own bags sounds a very good idea.

I prefer paper and bring the bags back, if they are in good condition. The only bad part is sometimes the handles break and the store doesn't want them back. I try to do my part in helping our environment whenever I can help.

paper bags do not seem to be as strong anymore, they must be making them less thick. I remember the commissary used to double up the paper bags, but now they just use a single and if they put too much in they always tear. Seems it was cheaper actually to make them a better quality as you could put more in each sack to begin with so you would end up using less bags.

as far as possible, if i do need a carrier i would always ensure that i have my own cotton resuable carrier. if i forgot to bring mine, i would ask for a paper bag if i need a carrier, if all else fails then i would get a plastic bag, but i would reuse that bag once i reach home, perhaps to pick up other food waste.

we don't have that option here. they usually bag our groceries in plastic. some people bring they're own market bag though.

Here we do not have a choice at grocery stores, it is always plastic bags. Personally, I find those plastic bags practical, though a bit small to my linkings. Some people complained about plastic bags 7 years ago. They said that they are not good for the environment. Grocery stores used to provide larger paper bags, not anymore.

I have started asking for paper bags. they are a little less convenient because they tear, but I can recycle them and use them for different things here at the house. I like to do crafts and I can lay out the paper bags easily on the table and put the glues and paints on top of it. Also, my daughter likes to cover her books, and this is a cheap alternative to having to buy those book covers. Not to mention paper bags make great gift wrap for those occasional gifts that don't require a theme!

I normally have a couple of shopping bags with me in the car so when I do my shopping I can use them instead of the plastic bags. My partner and I are both very keen on recycling and prefer not to use the plastic bags now, so we make sure we have our own bags whereever possible.

i have a backpack i bring with me for shopping, but i have totes for "big" shopping as i call it. i'll usually get a ride for that one, because it's too much to carry. but i try to avoid the plastic whenever possible.they're not very sturdy, and there's too many blowing around loose locally as it is.

I wish that they offered boxes in our local grocery stores. It is usually paper or plastic. Sometimes I prefer paper because they are more easily recycled...but I have to admit that it is easier to grab those plastic bag handles!

Well, we generally use plastic bags because at most of the stores in our area we don't even get a choice of paper or plastic. If we do happen to remember to ask for paper pretty much all of our stuff is already bagged. If we go to Sam's Club we use the boxes provided and like you I love the idea of things not toppling over. You got me thinking now, we usually shop at Wal-Mart for the majority of our food and I don't even think they have paper bags unlike Food Lion, Kroger, etc. Am I wrong or do they have paper? Hmmm....

I usually get plastic. I use them for trashbags, recycle them at the grocery store or take them to the library.

I like to use Plastic, because of the easie to carry handels, I don't like to make more them one trip to the cars so I grab all the handels and make one trip. I also reuse the bags in my small trash cans in the house for a trash liner. I also use them when I scope the cat litter.
