I absolutely do think Cheerleading IS a sport. I am a professional judge for sportsaerobic, streetdance, hiphop and showdance competitions and I consider Cheerleading is in that line of sports, it is (like all sports with a show element) a cosmetic/esthetic individual team sport..

No thanks.. Overhere in the Netherlands we don't have a cheerleading culture like there is in the US, but the Team I used to be in became European Champion last year and went to Orlando last April...so..

cheerleader - cheerleader jump
As a current cheer coach, I would have to say that cheerleading is as grueling a sport as many others. To get our bodies to perform the many tumbling and stunting skills, takes months and even years to achieve. Before practices, we run 1 mile...every practice. Then it is a 30 minutes of exercises like v-ups, straddle-ups, push ups and cardio. After that is done, we practice our cheers and competition routines. I can tell you from experience, that you are one tired puppy when the 2 hour practice is over.

yes it is a sport it just depends like for instance if the team is competive and they do do stunts and stuff like that then yes its just as much of a sport and as for cheering like in middle schools and stuff it just depends on the squad and what they can do but as a cheerleader i think its a sport because they condition us to do things like stunts and jumps and flips because we need muscle for all those things.

That is so true. The flips ,stunts and jumps are sports actually.

Well, for me it really depends. Like I don't consider the local small town high school cheerleading teams to be mindblowing. But I have watched cheerleading on tv before, and in movies, and I think it is a sport, and they do some amazing things! I'd say that next to gymnastics, cheerleaders are among the most athletic out of all sports. I mean, sure, in football and baseball they run a lot, but those people who cheer or do gymnastics, those people run, jump, flip, twist their bodies in ways that I could not even imagine doing! I think a sport is really anything combining athleticism with competition, and cheerleading tends to be very competitive. Sometimes the cheers can be annoying, but the cheerleading that is competitive is typically so much more than cheesy high school cheering! LOL

It's definitely a sport to me. It's like any game, practice, practice, practice. It sure looks like a lot of fun, but you know for alot of their stunts they do, takes alot of practice. Some might think different, but they work as hard as any sport would take to succeed. A sport alot of people would like to do, but like other sports, they are picky on who to accept to be part of the team. Which is terrible, just because someone may not look the way some of these girls want them to look, doesn't mean they are'nt very talented and limbar.

i believe that it's a sport simply because you do it to compete, you practice as hard and as much as any athlete to make it perfect...

Cheerleading should be considered a sport. Not just because I'm a former cheerleader, but because in all sports, you practice until you get the play perfect..In cheerleading, we practice until the stunt goes up or until we get the dance or cheer together. We practice as often and work just as hard as athletes in mainstream sports and there is an element of teamwork and words like character, commitment, and dedication that all coaches like to talk about.

I think you should call a cheerleading a sport because we work hard to make sure we don't make mistakes. We do what most team do. We run, We stretch out, we work as a team... Ain't that what a sport is working together and we do as it as a team and show school spirit. We be aggressive and show a positive attitude through our chants and cheers and stunts and flips... Some people thinks cheerleading shouldn't be a sport because we don't do much as other sports but do as much then other teams.

i consider cheerleading to be a sport because it requires alot of physical energy to do i think wrether it is sideline cheerleading (just cheering for football or basketball games) or it is competition cheerleading alot of people do not see cheerleading as a sport instead they see it as just a bunch of girl bouncing around but cheerleading has a set of coreigraphed routines and rules i think cheerleading is more of a sport than lacross or ultimate frisbee (im not saying these things just because i was a cheerleader for eight years)
