OK so my son made me feel so old today. He was playing a game with his sisters and asked me if I had ever played it. I had not because I have never heard of this game he spoke of so I told him No I have not. And he then started going down the list of games he thought I should know how to play. Some I had heard of some I didn't. So I told him that they are new games that he is being taught and I had never played them but if he wanted to teach me I will play with them. He then asked me about a show he saw today at school. And asked if I had ever seen it again I told him no because I had never heard of it. Now this is what made me feel so old. He said and I quote "Mom didn't you have TVs back then?" All I could do was laugh and say of course we did I'm not that old.

Never mind! Age is relative. For me you are very young :) Don't you remember how life looked when being a child? The world seems to have started the day one came into it. Everything that existed before is necessarily 'old'. At 8, those who are 16, are old, those who are more than 20, are ancients. I remember that once I thought that I would prefer to die before reaching the horrible age of 30. When 30 came, I welcomed it and started the best ten years of life. And from then on I enjoyed life so much, at any age and think with shudder of how much I suffered when being young and lacked all those marvellous experience the years give to us. As to what children have nowadays: yes, you should know it, but don't worry if you still prefer your 'ancient' games, plays, idols, songs, etc. to those your children have. They don't know better! LOL

I will be 28 in August. I have an 10 yr old daughter (yes i was young when i had her) and i've discovered that i'm clueless when it comes to some of the music she tells me she likes. Now thats bad. I love music but i just cant seem to keep up with all the new bands and artist, tv shows and trends that are coming out nowadays. It's funny when you think back to when you were that age and everything your parents liked seemed so "old fashioned" and they had no clue about the things that you liked. It's weird how things change. It's the cycle of life. lol. Although now i actually prefer listening to the music my parents used to listen to back in the day, and I love watching old classic films that my grandparents probably watched. I think that we are not getting older we are just developing better taste as the years go by. :-)

That is too cute! Luckily, mine is too young to make comments like that. But, I'm sure in a year or two, she'll realize that mama is as outdated as a pair of 1970's bell bottoms. That's what kids are for, I guess, reminding us that we are the past, and they are the future. We like a lot of the same things. Guess I'm just a big kid at heart. As far as her shows go, surprisingly, I like all of them. I wish Toy Story and Shrek had been around when I was a kid. They are so much cooler than the dumb Shirt tails and Smurfs cartoons we used to watch on Saturday morning TV. So many things have changed for kids. I didn't get my first computer till I was in my mid twenties. My daughter, got hers when she turned three years old. It's a sign of the times.

Try being 49 & having a 12 year old...He makes me feel old constantly! I grew up with black & white TV & ony 3 channels, records with record players with 3 speeds, 33 1/3, 45 & 78, I rode my bike everywhere, we didn't have game boys, or computers or cell phones or ipods...just transistor radios, if we were lucky! We played outside all the time & read books! Of course, now I have records, tapes & CDs & most of it is on my ipod...so I have kept up!

I'll 28 in less than to months so I'm right there with you on this too! My oldest is good with the letters-for-words chat speak stuff. I can get a lot of it but there were a few I had to ask her about. So she said to me "You mean you didn't write like that when you were my age?" No, we spelled all of our words out and we talked to our friends on the phone. "You had your own cell phone!?" No, we used the real phone....blank stare from her...until I said, You know, the thing that hangs on the wall. She replied "Oh, you had THEM back then?!" Good thing my four year old still thinks I'm 10 or 20 or maybe 13 or 6 LOL (He says that Daddy is 50 or 100 lol shhh!)

Aw, that is pretty cute. I love it when little kids try to guess the ages of adults. They can come up with some fairly crazy numbers, like you might be eighty seven, and be totally serious. One of my kids thought when he was still little that they might not have had cars when I was young, because I was telling him there had been no such thing as computers or the internet. He found it inconceivable!

No! You are not old! It is just a different generation. You might want to check the things your kids are into though, just to monitor what they are watching :)

yes. each generation is different from the other. there are new things waiting for us to be discovered and yet, there are classics which should always be kept alive no matter how old time is. lovelyladydancing is right. you aren't too old. you're just busy with life and that you weren't able to update yourself with new things. if you have time, spend time with your son and learn new things from him as he learns classic learnings from you.

Your post cheered me up, and brought a smile to my face. My daughter is 29, and I'm 48. My grandkids ask me all the time if I have had the same things back in the day. They even make me tell them all about it. I even get on the kick about how when I was almost a teenager they came out with cable TV hehe. They are like wow nanny you really must be old. It's too funny they will come to me first to see if I know about something, instead of asking their mother. Humm...

hi,lifez2short.hehe, it is very interesting discussion for me to discuss.hehe.i have a similar situation as your. during the last spring festival, i went to visite my relative, excatly is my uncle.hehe. my niece is a pretty little girl who would like to play on computer and paly internet games or watch cartoon all day.when i played with her, she ask me whether i could paly the game she was playing. i told her i couldn't and i smiled with her.but she said:"oh, why do you not play the games? maybe in the old day, you have a chance to play a game on internet let alone tv.you are out day." i think i am just coming 23 next year, i know a lot of thing but just seldom play internet games.hehe.what should i do? play a game with her.of course not, i did my study and let she play on computer. don't be seriously, because she just a little girl. thank you for you discussion.

Been there know the feeling. My son makes comments like that all the time. I am only 25 right up there with you, and he is always talking about games and stuff I have never heard of. Like wall ball. In my day we called it handball. He had no idea what I was talking about. I tries to teach him ( its not that hard) and he got so upset he cried, and has never asked me to play wall ball with him again. I think frommy understsanding wall ball is something along the lines of raquetball, but getting instructions from a 6 year old can be as confusing as getting them from someone who does not speak english. So i feel you on this one.

and your son puts humor in your life. he gives meaning to you and gives answer to your every question. before you thought of feeling old. but then, later, your son made you realize that you aren't that old at all. i am sure that your son is the very person who can bring a smile back at your very sad face. i am not a mother yet. but as i see kids these days, they are curious and know a lot of things. at times, they are the ones who let us know new things which we haven't thought of before. they even make us realize important matters in life. so, cheer up lifez2short and be happy with the life that you have.

haha kids are great for making us feel old. One of the kids I teach thinks I'm old: I'm 25. I think kids don't realize 28 and that isn't exactly that old haha.

Don't feel too bad as I am 35 and already a Grandpa. Not to mention I actually had my daughter ask mee how to pop regular pop corn as she was amazed and thought that all there was for home use was microwave popcorn. Don't beat yourself up as time goes on and we all must get old at some point but remember it is all a frame of mind as you are only old when you start looking at nursing homes for yourself, until then live life to it's fullest!!! Have a great day!!!

This made me laugh kids are so funny, they really think we came out of the dark ages with horse and cart. My 13 year old daughter asked me the other day if we had hair dryers when I was groing up. I am only 31 so I understand how you feel. My youngest also thought my mum was my sister thats how she knew all these stories about me when I was young. This actually made me feel really old and went inside and put face cream on.
