Are you troubled with leg cramps at night?

I am like so many of you and have problems with waking in the wee hours of the morning with leg pains or cramps. My mother was searching the internet one day and found a site with home remedies on it. The site explained how ordinary things you may have in your kitchen can help you get a good night sleep. A table spoon of plain mustard an hour before bed will help you get rid of those pesky leg cramps. I did not believe it my self until I tried it myself. I have been cramp free for over a month now and can say without a doubt that this works for me. I think you should give it a try it is not habit forming or bad for you in any way. Give it a try what do you have to loose.

Yes. I deal with this also. I try to get comfortable in the bed and I stretch my legs out and get a muscle cramp or a charlie horse. I will have to try the mustard thing. I have never heard of that until now. I like the taste of mustard so it shouldn't be too bad to do and try. I hope it works for me also.

I truely hope it works for you as well I only take a teaspoon full the same as my mom. My dad thinks he is a big man so he has to take more than us wimpy women so he takes a table spoon. I am not all that found of the taste so I will just take my little wimply teaspoon.

Me too. My husband would probably think I am crazy to even try this but he gets leg cramps too sometimes. I bet he will try it too next time.

I know it sounds crazy but there are tons of home remedies that are out there. Doctors for years have recommended people drink at least 8 ounces of Cranberry juice to keep kidney's clean. In my case I did not think it would work either but after my mom started using and those pesky so called charlie horses stopped. I just had to try. I have been using it for a little over a month and am not having any problems. I do not know if it is my mind telling me it works or my body is saying it works. All I know is for me, my mom and dad, it works. It is an alternative to medication and other medical treatments.

Forms of mustard - Mustard seeds and powder
I've had leg cramps during my first pregnancy. I had it almost every night. That stopped after delivery so it was a load of. I do have leg cramps occasionally nowadays. How does the mustard thing work? Are you talking about the mustard seeds? or mustard paste (yellow in colour)? mustard powder? You have to swallow it? Thanks. - Lyn

It is just the plain old yellow mustard you put on hotdogs and such. I take one teaspoon a night a no more cramps for me. My mom also takes it.

Hey sizzle, i was just wondering (out of curiosity), will it help as much if i were to eat hotdogs with loads of mustard (which i like) instead of eating it plain (don't quite like) ? - Lyn

I sometimes get cramps when i don't drink enough water during the day. And i think it has also to do with low calcium intake. So i try to drink plenty water and eat yohurt for my calcium requirement to avoid getting cramps as one tends to sweat a lot in summers esp and can get dehydrated easily. I think streching one's legs douing basic stretches for all limbs is good idea. And have never of mustard tip will surely take note of it. Thanks. :)

Wow, that's really interesting! I've definitely never heard of that before. I used to get leg cramps all the time at night, but fortunately I don't really have that problem as often now. It does still happen occasionally though, so I'll have to keep this tip in mind. Thanks for the suggestion!

Fortunately I dont have any such cramps and this has allowed me to get a good nights sleep at all times .However I feel your pain and I understand how you might want to get the best relief that was possible.I do agree with you though that many times the answer lies in simple home remedies and these are even more effective than pescribed sythetic medicine

From time to time I have suffered from these when I sleep, and they can be quite annoying for sure. It would be nice if there was a way to keep these from coming, but even with all of the remedies and solutions out there I have not found something that does not fail from time to time for sure. But I do use a natural suppliment that has helped with leg cramps, etc. and also eat a lot of Bananas which seems to help a lot of the time. I have also read and heard that putting a bar of soap under a pillow and sleeping with your feet and legs on that pillow will help these as well. I could never do the mustard thing as I am not a Big fan of it, but if it works that is Good for you.

I get them really bad and for years I suffered with them. I have found a solution though...I find that I get the cramps when my legs get too cold at night. I've found that if I put an extra blanket over my legs at night I don't have the leg cramps. Not sure if it works for everyone but thought I'd mention it. This sounds like something my wife and I will be trying soon because no one likes being wakened up at night with leg cramps. But if it does happen, I have learned a method to get rid of the cramps within seconds. As soon as you feel a cramp coming on, just use your thumb and index finger to pinch the skin between your upper lip and the bottom of your nose and hold it tightly for about twenty seconds until the cramps subside. It has worked for me and my wife about 99 percent of the time.

As a nurse with lots of hospital experience,I know that the simpliest solution to leg cramps is Milk.Leg cramps is due to lack of Calcium in the body.So drink at least 3 glasses of milk everyday and eat broccoli, almonds (these are rich in calcium). Then take calcium tablet as prescibed by the doctor. For sure, your leg cramps will go away.

when i was pregnant leg cramps occur during dawn. i notice this usually happens the moment i skip on my calcium tablets. i used to take these since i am lactose intolerant and this is cheaper comapared to lactose free milk. so maybe you need to meet your calcium requirements...although i do remember having a friend doctor mention something like it is vitamin b deficiency...

I will try that and see if it works. I've been told that it's from where I'm not drinking enough water but I have some other symptoms along with it that can't be explained by dehydration. thanks for the help

Wow, I've never heard that before. I've never actually had cramps at night while I'm sleeping but I have during the day. I wonder what is in mustard that prevents cramps and pains in the limbs? I've always taken a vitamin during the day when I do have pains in my arms or legs and that seems to help me a lot, but I'll try out the mustard thing sometime too to see if it works on me.
