A friend of mine was complaining that her child keeps on thumb sucking after eating and she was curious to know why.
all her attempt to stop her proved abortive and she was worried about the situation.
But my advice was that the child will stop probably she was growing teeth (teething).
Do have any advice for my friend? will the baby stop it? if yes, when?
she said one of her children has been thumb sucking for the past five years and has not also stopped.
this other baby is also thumb sucking and people are telling her that both of them
will stop it. is it true?
she said it a habit that she hates in children, would they stop it with time?
does it have any effect on children?

Babies suck their thumbs b/c it is comforting. I don't think you can stop a thumbsucker, and trying to do so is stressful for both. I do think that most will stop on their own, if left alone, when they no longer need the comfort. The others will become mature enough to decide on their own whether and when to stop, and may ask for help at that time.
Even if they suck their thumbs until adulthood, does it matter that much? It's not a moral, safety, or health issue. Not worth fighting and making everyone miserable over.

6in12years, thanks for your response. infact, we have been trying to stop the baby from sucking the thumb but all to no avail. so they suck it for comfort that is exciting!! since it has no health implications we will leave him alone. thanks so much.
