Would you ever pick up a hitch hiker?

When I was coming home from the zoo today with my daughter I saw a hitch hiker on the side of the interstate. I started thinking to myself and wondering if I would ever give someone a chance and pick up a hitch hiker. I may sound cruel for saying this but I don't think I could ever bring myself to pick up a hitch hiker, especially if I had my daughter with me. It's sad that in our society that you can't trust people that could be truly stranded because of the crazy people out there who could hurt or even kill you. I'm just too leery of people.
So would you ever pick up a hitch hiker? Why or why not?

No I would not. There are too many nut cases out there. Although there does not seem to be so many of them on the highways as there was a few years ago. Perhaps it is more prevalent in rural areas.

My husband used to like picking up hitch hikers whenever we were on a trip. We picked up some pretty strange people. Some were clearly mentally ill, and some smelled bad, I mean really bad. I finally said, no more hitch hikers! I don't feel like dealing with them, even for a short time.

I would not pick up a hitch hiker, as two young women from the school I attended were killed getting into a car. I knew the family of one of the girls and her parents would tell her not to get into strange cars, so I don't know why she decided to hitch hike across the country with her friend. Their bodies were found in California and at the time they were from Oregon, but nobody has been arrested and the case is unlikely to ever be solved sadly. If you want to do a road trip with a friend, then take the bus, train, bike, or drive so your not taking unnecessary risk of your life and your friend.

I definitely wouldn't pick up a hitch hiker, unless it was someone I knew. It's just not safe. You never know whether the people really need a ride or if they are just planning to kill you and take your car or something.
I won't even stop if someone is stranded on the side of the road. In North Dakota, men are required by law to stop if someone is off the road during the winter time (because it's so cold, it doesn't take long to die), but the law doesn't apply to women, or men with small children with them. I know it sounds terrible to say I wouldn't stop, but I really wouldn't, unless it was a woman with small children.

No, it isn't safe to pick anyone up anymore. I have stopped and helped a college student that was walking one time as his car was out of gas and in the middle of the media of the highway. I was leary but I knew that he was in trouble and he was very thankful to me.
He wasn't hitch hiking but he was walking. It is sad that we can't trust people but that is the way that society is.

Picking up a hichhiker no way. You dont know who they are or what their real intent is. You could so easlily end up being hurt or killed by befriended someone this way. We live in a very small town where everyone knows everyone and if it is someone that i know quite well that is different but that dont happen to often. Its not being leery it is being safe.

I wouldn't. I've heard too many bad things about people that pick up hitch hikers. I mean, you never know exactly what this person is up too, or what kind of things they're hiding in their belongings or under their clothing. I don't want to be a victim of some person's rampage if they decide to commit and evil deed.

There used to be a time when we could pick up people and be safe but now days not so much i dont think I would pick anyone up unless I knew them, I see so many signs along the freeway saying prison in area do not pick up hitchickers, gives me the creeps.
