Pets in your car...beware!!

In the summer, it is quite hot in most places. We do not realize, that your dogs and cats do not have sweat glands. Therefore, thy over heat easily. Do not keep them locked in your car, even with the windows opened, in the summer. A couple of years ago, I saw a women do this. She was screaming and crying, as her dog was dead. They get very overheated in the car, as the heat in there builds up. It can be as hot as 120 and higher. So please, please, do not keep them in there while you dine out or shop. They can die.

I have seen so many pets in the hot car and it makes me want to scream! Some has the window down about 1/2 inch and some lower than that. I just don't see how they not think about their pets in the hot cars.It doesn't take long for them to die in a hot heat. I have never kept my pets in the car.

I have never done it either. I take a carry case, and they come with me, if they must be with me for some reason.

I agree with you, Margie. Pets are not toys, which means you shouldn't leave them alone in the car. They might die, but even if it's cold you should not let them. Imagine yourself locked in a place, without being able to exit, in a place you've never seen before. You don't know when someone will come to rescue you... How would you feel? Well, you don't want your dog to feel that, I'm pretty sure. The same goes with babies and children.

You know, it still amazes me when I hear stories like that in the news, or worse, when they leave their kids in the hot car. Really makes me wonder what they're thinking, or rather why they aren't thinking. Common sense, the car's hot when you get in it after it's been sitting for a bit, why wouldn't it when your pet's in it? I remember where I used to work, someone left their dog in the car in the parking lot. I was just waiting for my sargeant to give me permission, but he wanted to attempt to find the owner first....me and another guy were all set to smash out the window, and really wanted to lol. Figured that would be a good way for them to learn, paying for their smashed out window. But they found the owner, we were very disappointed lol.

Nice to see you around sugar. Thanks for your input. I just think that they are not compassionate and very selfish people. No real feelings for pets.

The temps where I live go over 120 OUTSIDE of the car; so, you can imagine how hot they are inside. Every year we have public service announcements about leaving pets in teh car and they just had one on the radio a few minutes ago. They also mentioned something I was NOT aware of; they said if we saw an animal (or child) that had been left in a car to call 911. They said that if you tried to do something about it yourself it was illegal and you could be arrested! So, be sure you know what the laws are where you live, before you try to "rescue them" yourself.

Thanks for the advice. I would definately call the police. It is against the law here. But some people are so ignorant.

What a great warning to let people know. But unfortuntely it still happens despite all the warning. I have seen it so many times and it just breaks your heart to think that people either dont care or didnt have the knowledge.

I know, it is so sad. They cannot speak. How would a person like to sit in a car in that heat? They can be so selfish and uncaring it breaks my heart.

Glad you read this. So many people do not realize how hot the car gets, and that the animal can get heat stroke so easy.

Yeah, I agree with you on that. I see alot of people that leave their dogs in the car all the time. They would leave the window open a little bit but I know that isn't enough for all the air to come in at all.

The car will still get 120 or more inside. They can get heat stroke. I wish these people had more feelings for their pets.

Pet owners should think twice, if they would not enjoy sitting in that car, the animals would not either. Pets do die every day from neglect like this. We should not leave our kids or vulnerable adults in such a situation, either. It does not make any sense. Leave your pets home, where they will be safe. It happens even in early spring and late fall, because the heat is multiplied in a closed car.

Pet owners should also be aware of what their pets ingest. Garlic and onions can make a dog terribly sick, as well as azaleas and rhododendrums. Lilacs are poison to cats.

Its not good to lock anyone in a car, even if they are just pets they are also living beings and experience similar sensation like humans and we have to learn to respect that I didnt know it was such a big deal thiugh. This makes me aware of all that can happen if you leave your pets unwatched. Owning a pet is a great responsibilty just like having a child.

I just read in the papers the other day that dogs sweat through their feet. So your car seats wont be clean after wards. And yes, overheating is a problem, not just for dogs, by even babies.
