How many tithes envelopes do you take at church?

When I was a kid I'd see people taking big handfuls of tithes envelopes on their way of of church. And, I always wondered if these people actually ever used them all. At the time I didn't know that these stationary items cost money, so it wasn't such a big deal for me. But, now thinking back over it, I wonder if the adults taking all those extra envelopes thought about the burden they were placing on everyone. Have you ever seen someone do this in a church? Have you ever done it before?

My mom always took a handful, but we gave them in Sunday school, and she had 4 kids, plus her own to fill out every week, so she always got them done before we got to church. So she would grab 15 or 20 at a time, so that they would last her a few weeks. She would only grab some if she was almost out, and we were never allowed to touch them except when we put them in our classroom's offering. Otherwise they were strictly off limits.

Our tithe envelopes are registered. A box of envelopes holds dated envelopes, one for every Sunday plus Christmas and Easter. The boxes are numbered. You sign your box out with your number so that the money you give can be credited to your account so that you get a tax receipt at the end of the year for charitable deductions. Sometimes they have envelopes for other charities but they are usually stapled to the inside of the bulletin so only one goes to each household. I have never seen anyone grab a bunch of envelopes. They have printing on them so they can't really be used for anything else. It's funny you should ask because we went to church today and we usually only give five dollars because we're pretty broke. Well, we didn't have a bill so I had to use two Toonies and a Loonie ($2 and $1 coins) and to ensure they didn't fall out, I took the envelope into the kitchen to tape the flap closed. I ended out leaving it on the kitchen table and didn't even take it to church. We'll give $10 next week.

I usually only take one when I'm ready to give money to the church. I know a couple of people take more than one so that they can have their tithe ready before they walk into church next time. But, I've never seen anyone take big handfuls. One or two extra ones should be enough for most people who tithe regularly.

You know, people just don't think. Not only is someone paying to have those printed, think of the environmental resources being used! It is so wasteful! I have seen mothers take them for their children to draw and color on! So very sad. No, I don't take them..and if I felt the need for one or two, that is all that I would ake!

I haven't seen anyone do it but I have seen my child...on the opposite end of the pew...take a handful and start drawing on them...completely freaked me out because I know that these things cost money and besides...there's a perfectly good bulletin to write on! lol! So, my rule is that no one draws on the envelopes...and everyone things I'm strange! lol!!

I only take one when I use it. I don't take any home.

I have never heard of these envelopes before. I am not a particularly religous person but I did attend church and sunday school as a child and money was just put in to a collection box that was passed around or at the end of the pews. Also their was a sealed collection box in the doorway. Have things changed since I was a child in this respect? It somehow seems wrong to ask for tax reduction on church collection money. Somehow seems to lessen the good intention behind it.

I thought that it was only my church that spoke about tithes, as I have never heard anybody else ever speaking of tithes and really paying a full tithe each and every month as the word implies, tithe - one tenth of you gross monthly income or weekly or what ever. We also have the tithe envelopes at the chapel to take to put our tithes in and hand over to the Bishop or one of his councellors... I have not every heard of anybody misusing them or abusing them, but sometimes I take a couple of them for a couple of months so that I can take my tithes to church all ready and I do not have to write it out at the church. Thanks for this posting... very interesting.
