What type of sewing machine do you use? Do you like the machine you have, or would you prefer a different one?I have a Singer 99-31 that I inherited. The copyright date in the manual is 1957, so I think that qualifies my machine as an antique. Interestingly, it seems like this model of machine was originally mounted on a block and had a hard carrying case, but mine has been mounted into a table. I'm hoping to buy a much newer machine soon, both because I'd rather not hurt my antique machines, and because this model doesn't even do a zig-zag stitch.

Do you sew by hand primarily, then? A lot of my projects, I just don't know how I could do by hand!

I have a Janome harmony 2039 and I hate it, my mother-in-law bought it for me from an outlet store and I've nothing but trouble with it.It has a lot of stitches and what not but out of the middle of nowhere while I'm sewing it'll freak out and rip a big hole in my fabric or the thread will bunch up and make a big mess. I've taken it in to be fixed and of course nothing works and theres nothing really wrong with it, I think my machine just hates me. I also can't sew through more then about two layers of regular canves. I'm hoping to get a new singer or white, anything but a janome.

Oooo I'm glad you started this thread! I'm looking to buy a sewing machine again but am at a complete loss at what to get..Now that you've started this thread I can see what others have or want and do some comparison shopping LOL.... I HAD an older machine YRS ago, it was from the 60s then in the late 90s my mum bought me a machine but for the life of me I cant remember what it was...I ended up having to sell at a yard sale we had to raise money when Tyler was in the hospital....

What a great old sewing machine and it still works. I sewed on a Kenmore for about 30 years. And finally I got a new one. I got a Brother. I just love all the new stitches this one has. Much better than the old I had.

I have 3 sewing machines. The newest one is a Brother that I got at Wal Mart. I have no idea what model it, or the others, is. The middle one is a Singer. It looks to be from the 70's. Again, no idea what the model is. The oldest one I have is another Brother. It looks to be from about the 30's. It is shaped like the old cabinet treadle machines, but it's electric. It doesn't do zig-zag either. But, it's a workhorse. I got it to sew denim and canvas.

I have a Kenmore that I bought from Sears. It's a good machine, without many bells and whistles, but it can do a zigzag stitch and came with a thingy for making button holes.

i have a swiss bernina my mother gave me..but you know what?i wish i had my kenmore with the cogs for fancy stitches back. the bernina IS a faster sewing machine, but the lever change from fancy stitch to fancy stitch doesn't work as well in my opinion..and sometimes it gets stuck. i also have an antique foot tredle/electric industrial machine-it came from a factory. i love that thing-you can sew through a stack of denim if you wanted to-i think it might have been for sails originally.

well i do not currently have a sewing maching right now i want to get one in the near future i have looked around at different stores for one that i like but they are all just so expensive for Christmas a few years ago i got one of the little fifteen dollar sewing machines from walmart and it did not work so i took it back and got another one of the same kind and i could not get it to work either so i had to take it back to the store also when it comes to sewing machines you definitely get what you paid for haha i have heard the brothers are sopposed to be really good
