I am watching my neighbors puppy for a couple of weeks while they are gone. This is the second day I have been with her, seen her a total of 4 times (one time each morning and one in evening). Well I just got back from playing, and I actually trained their pup to do something! I taught her to sit (she already knew how to do that though) and to wait until I give her her treat. I mean that I have her sit, and then I place a piece of food, or a treat near or far from her and tell her 'no' and 'stay.' And she doens't go for the food until I say okay and give it to her. I taught her this in a matter of minutes, and she is a VERY hyper puppy. Is that good that I could teach her that so quick, or is that an easy trick to teach?

Hello, Lily. I am really glad in knowing you taught your neighbour's puppy how to stay in just a few minutes. What interests me more is that you taught it in only one day! You know, I also trained my dog. I started to think what if I tried to teach him. When I first told my mother I was going to teach him, she laughed at me. She doubted me. Soon, my dog was sitting under my orders, but I still needed to train him more. I needed to train him not to lay down when I said sit and not to sit when I said lay down. Also, not to obey everyone that ordered him to do so. My dog is very smart, I am sure he would learn it with ease. But my mother and my brother would mess up his mind, telling him to sit everytime, praising him when he laid down instead of sitting, etc. I stopped training him by there, then. He knows how to sit and lay down. My mother uses to say I have the gift with animals. Maybe she'd say the very same of you. I think stay is a bit more complicated command, but you sure managed to teach it to that puppy! I think the puppy must be really intelligent, and you also must be a good trainer. Congratulations! Now, try out your luck on this job!

Thank you! :) It seems you did very well in training your dog too! My mom and sister also messed up my training with my golden retriever. I taught her to drop a tennis ball or toy in my hand when I say 'give.' But my sister kept using 'drop it' so I was kind of mad and annoied at that. Now my dog doens't really know which one to listen to. I'm not sure how I taught my neighbors dog stay so quickly lol. I just had a lot of patience with her. AND Hand Movements that go along with orders are VERy important. I put my hand up when I said "stay" and I waved my finger at her when I said "no." She actually watched my hands while I said the order. Try having a hand motion for every order and that will help them learn faster! :)

Hey, you just gave me a professional tip! That's awesome! Maybe I should re-train my dog, all from the beggining, but now with hand orders as well, huh? The problem is when he goes to the street with me... I take him for a walk, and he just won't pay attention to me. He gets all surprised, scared, don't know... Thanks for the tip! Thank you very much!

yeah, hand signals worked really well for my golden retriever. You should teach your dog both though. For walking make sure he knows the spoken command very well...and when you want to show off what you did go with the hand signals! :)

I love teaching dogs tricks, especially when they are calm and LET me teach them. I can't figure out any more tricks to try. I tried roll over, but everytime I try to show her she jumps on me lol. I might try to teach her to shake too, i'll have to see if she's calm enough for that tomorrow. Any more tricks I could try?

Well actually, when this dog sits she does lay down. So I don't know if that's how my neighbors taught her, but I don't want to change it. When I say sit she lays down and looks up at me, she does it very well so it's an accomplishment to me, even if she isn't exactly sitting.

You might try lay down first. My mom taught our dog to sneeze. Sit up and beg is another one. Just remember start small and take each trick one step at a time. Fetching a ball or other toy is a fun trick too.

Most dogs LOVE to please, and love to learn new tricks. It's awesome that you took the initiative to help to teach their new puppy! How old is this puppy? It's really not a great idea that they leave a new puppy alone at such an early part of it's life! Puppies are like little kids. Their brains are sponges and they are learning to live in this world and learning what appropriate behavior is. Great job, and I hope your neighbors are happy!

hey training an puppy (that also an hyper puppy ) is not an easy job.Cool talent you have .Explore it further and try teaching few more tricks to the puppy. I know training isn't easy because we have a dog which i just couldn't train well enough .It was smart and lazy (which is a deadly combination)and i have to end up repeating the commands to get her to do the trick and i end up stressed .thats all.good work keep it going.

Hi Lilyofthethorns, I think your doing a great job. Both of my dogs are pretty hyper and they both know that I wont put their food down for them until they sit. I think if you keep foing it with the puppy, you shouldnt have any problem with it doing the same thing when the owner gets home. Just keep up the good work, Take care, Terry

Considering that you said it was a very hyper puppy, then I think its really goo that you taught her that trick in such a short amount of time. One of my dogs will do that because my boyfriend taught him but the other ones are as well behaved.
