Breastfeeding moms.... higher needs at 3 to 6 months?

My son is almost 3 months old now, and I have noticed drastic differences in his eating patterns and intake. For example, he now sleeps 7 to 8 hours a night instead of waking up every 2 to 4 hours to eat, but now he wants to cluster feed all day to make up for it! I'm on HIS schedule, so I don't mind at all feeding on demand. My question to you is, did you notice a difference in milk production/supply between 3 and 6 months of age? I have two friends who told me they felt they just couldn't keep up with their children's needs at that time. One even told me she felt like her gums were receding... that her son was leeching all her nutrients. This friend had gained 60 pounds during pregnancy and lost it all at that time, plus some. Is this a common experience? A lactation consultant I know also said she found it common for women to start supplementing around 3 months.

My son nursed more at that age and I did supplement with some cereal. He did slow down after a month or two but he stills eats like crazy whenever he has a growth spurt.

Yes this is normal. It is caused by your child's growth spurt.
