Why does Voldemort need the prophecy?

I just watched the movie Order of the Phoenix. I was just wondering why Voldemort needs the prophecy. It was mentioned that he didn't have something when he first tried to kill Harry so he is looking for that something now that he is back. Why would he want it and what do you think does he intend to do with it?

yeah, i'm wondering the same thing. i'v read the book, it wasn't mentioned there either. as far as i could remember, he needed it to find out how he could kill harry or something. but the prophecy doesn't have that information. it only confirms what is already happening...don't you think?

That's what I was wondering about too. Because it really didn't say much except that one of them has to die. But didn't seem to be anything on how it could've given Voldemort the upper hand.

It is needed because he did not know all of the prophecy in the past, acted on the little information he had, and in turn created a strong enemy is Harry. They say that knowledge is power, and in this case Voldemort lacked the power of knowing the whole story. Now Harry has heard the prophecy and knows that he must be the one to kill the dark lord.
