I write Public Relations articles for the school I work for. I have been amazed at the amount of publicity that has been covered on the release of the last Harry Potter book. I don't read the series, and my children aren't into them either. (Personal choice here people) Do you think all the hype is worth it? I wonder what you would have done with all the millions of dollars they spent on publicity for this book coming out. Wouldn't it have been well spent on say feeding the homeless...or a literacy program...or supporting the families of those left without one parent or another due to the war in Iraq or Hurricane Katrina?

I won't let any of my children read the Harry Potter books or see any of the movies. My kids think they are dump anyway and call them "Harry Potty" movies/books. I have always thought that hype over anything overrates that something that it the hype is all about.

My children haven't read them either, other than the one that was required reading in 7th grade English. I pitched a hissy fit, because I don't agree with forcing a child to read something that goes against their religious beliefs. Regardless of what they believe. I wouldn't expect a child whose parents were athiests, to be forced to read a book on the life of Christ either.

While they were standing in line in the middle of the night, and keeping their children up all night (Many instances on a school night), My children were safely tucked in bed, getting a good night's sleep before they went to school the next morning. They then had the option of reading the book in the library, like children have been doing for years.

Yes, it would be well spent charitably, but life just is not like that. It would have probably gone into some bureaucracy and been drained off to line some big wig's pockets. I think it would be awesome if there were some educational foundations established with some of the profits. Grants do worlds of good in the right places. I am not into Harry Potter, also just personal choice, and a reluctance to follow the crowd. I have always been that way. I imagine in three to five years I will decide to read the books. Even in Junior High School ( a lifetime ago) I refused to read what "everyone" was reading. At that time it was Tolkien. I love the books now.

That type of book, scorcery and witchcraft, have just never been my cup of tea. Personal choice, and I don't condemn those that do. I simply don't like that kind of stuff. I've never see the Lord of the Rings movies...and don't intend to.
