It is inborn in all animals. Even if a cat or dog has been adandoned it will take to motherhood as if it had been taught. Although I have seen animals as well as people who are not good mothers but that is an anomoly.

Do you think a mother's birthing experience affects her maternal instinct? I do.

Do you think we learn to be mothers by the way we were "mothered" ourselves?

Yes i do. I never grew up around babies, hardly ever been around them until i had one of my own. Honestly i had never even changed a diaper.... And as soon as i had my son, that all changed. I was scared, thought i was gonna be clueless on what to do and when. But thankfully i was wrong, maternal instincts are real, i believe in them.

Did you feel "maternal" toward your baby during pregnancy?

Most certainly. I have no emotions any stronger than the ones connected to my children. I always know when something is wrong, although I don't always know what it is.

Yes I do! It's amazing to just "know" what it is that your child needs/wants when they finally come out in the world. You spend the whole 9 months nurturing them and getting to know them, and that doesn't change once they are born!

I found it just gets stronger. My children are 30, 25, and 20 years old, and we are still connected with that "knowing".

Definitely. But I don't think that some people are meant to be parents more than others. I do feel like some want to be parents more than others and they make more of an effort.

Yes...Whole-heartedly! I believe that it takes being a mother (included mothers who are not biological) to fully understand and feel it.. I know there are mothers out there who don't have it, or turn their backs upon it, But a Real Mother does not purposely do such a thing~

I'm a mother, of course I believe in maternal instinct! If I didn't, I might not have the inclination to check on her when she's being too quiet, which usually means she's doing something she knows she's not allowed to do.

I do Not. I wa never around babies growing up and when I had my son . . . I didn't know what to do or how to do it. I never talked in "baby" talk or anything like that. I still don't think I'm very maternal.

Yes I do, but you have to be willing to listen to it! SO many women think they don't have it, when they do but are too scared to trust it.

Yes, absolutly I do. I believe it is just a part of a sense that everyone has but not everyone nutures or uses. I think that becoming a mother just opens up that sense easier for some.

When my children were little, and nursing, hearing any child cry would cause my milk to let-down!

I do. One of the best examples that I can think of for myself is that I'm a really heavy sleeper. My husband turns on the lights in the morning, bangs around opening drawers, makes lots of noise in the kitchen making breakfast and I never wake up. But, the second my daughter makes a sound, or coughs, or sometimes even if she moves, I'm wide awake. Another great example is the other night I heard my daughter crying after we'd put her to bed. My husband told me to just let her cry and she'd go back to sleep, but I had a feeling that something was wrong. I went into her room and she had somehow pushed her leg through her crib bars and had gotten stuck. My mom still knows when somethings wrong with me when I try to fool her. Maternal instinct is definitely a very real thing!

I love that you listen to your maternal instinct, and that your mom knows "even when you try to fool her"! Use this as a heads up for when your chld is older, always listen to your maternal instincts!

I do and I have a fair maternal instinct. So does my mom and her mom. I think Women are blessed with this. I have once read a nice email where an unborn child asks God who will take care of him cos God will not be there. So the God says, "I have appointed a very special person only to take care of you. She'll know why you cry, she'll know when you're hungry, she'll know when to put you to sleep and she'll know when you want just a hug."

yes I believe in maternal instinct, not only in humans but in animals too, because even if we did not have maternal instinct we have the ability to teach and learn but animals don't and the animals still care for their young. It's all part of nature

yes, i do. in fact, mine is so strong i just always got a clue of what's happening with him. even now that we're half a globe apart, i just seem to know when something's wrong or when he's ok or not. i call it maternal instinct, he calls it witchcraft, LOL!
